The programme will feature Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata at the Aurora Opera House on 17 October, followed by Giacomo Puccini's Madama Butterfly at the Astra Theatre on 29 and 31 October. La Traviata remains one of the best-known works in the oper- atic repertoire, while Madama Butterfly is among Puccini's most celebrated operas, known for its emotional intensity and musical score. The programme was officially launched by Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri, who said October provides an opportunity for au- diences from Malta and overseas to experience Gozo's operatic tradition alongside the island's hospitality and cultural heritage. "In October, Gozo celebrates its operatic tradition, welcom- ing audiences from Malta and abroad to enjoy exceptional quality performances in an at- mosphere that is truly unique to this island," Camilleri said. He described Opera is Gozo as more than a series of events, saying it also celebrates Gozitan creativity and cultural heritage. Alongside the two main pro- ductions, this year's programme will include concerts, perfor- mances, lectures, recitals and other activities aimed at show- casing Gozo's artistic heritage and introducing new audiences to opera. Camilleri also thanked those involved in organising the annu- al programme, saying their work contributes to Gozo's role as a cultural destination. The group began the journey on Wednesday as part of their participa- tion in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. Over the course of the expedition, the scouts are expected to pass through a number of villages and visit various places of interest as they make their way across the islands. The Victoria Scout Group said the ex- pedition forms part of the participants' Duke of Edinburgh Award experience, which encourages young people to take part in activities involving adventure, personal development and exploration. The three-day journey will see the scouts travel from Dwejra, on Gozo's western coast, before continuing through Malta and eventually reaching Marsaxlokk in the south-east of the is- land.
