VICTORIA has been selected as European Capital of Culture for 2031, making it the second Maltese city to hold the title af- ter Valletta in 2018. VICTORIA had been short- listed for the title in Novem- ber 2025, after being selected to proceed to the final stage of the competition. Birgu had al- so submitted a bid but did not make the shortlist. Victoria will share the European Capital of Culture title in 2031 with a Spanish city, which is expected to be announced in December. Commissioner for Intergen- erational Fairness, Youth, Cul- ture and Sport Glenn Micallef congratulated Victoria. He said the bid reflects Gozo's commu- nity spirit and cultural heritage while addressing the challenges of island life and the ability of young people to remain and build their future on the island. Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri said: "The selection of Victoria as the European Capital of Cul- ture for the year 2031 is a great opportunity to put Gozitan cul- ture, traditions, artists and tal- ents at the centre of European attention. Now begins the most important journey, to turn the vision into concrete action and to make the benefits of Victo- ria 2031 continue to be felt well beyond 2031."
