Leopard after sightings LEOPARD snake sightings have dropped to just 18 in the first eight months of 2026, with re- searchers warning the species could be functionally extinct within 10 years. The fall, from 33 sightings in the same period last year, rep- resents the steepest decline since records began in 2021. Nick Dobbs, who heads the citizen science project track- ing the species alongside his daughter Ellie, says the col- lapse is accelerating. "Our ongoing research is evi- dencing that the leopard Snake could be functionally extinct on the Maltese Islands within 10 years and it is by no means the only species in serious de- cline," Dobbs said. Working with 1,860 verified records across Malta, Gozo and Comino, Dobbs and his daugh- ter have identified the primary drivers. The leopard snake now represents 27% of all snake deaths documented across Malta's four native species, the highest mortality rate of any. Dobbs and his daughter studied Malta's four native and natu- ralised snake spe- cies from 2021 to 2023, combining c i t i z e n - s c i e n c e data with field s u r v e y s . The study s h o w e d that all s p e c i e s rely on dry stone walls for shelter, hunt- ing, and movement between fragmented habitats. When renovations replace these walls with concrete, the snakes dis- appear. However, the leopard snake's dependence on specific habitat features and its slower movement than other species make it far more vulnerable to the rapid changes across Malta.
