European Honey-buzzard A dozen or so species of birds of prey pass through Malta on their south-bound autumn migration. Perhaps the best known of these in the birdwatching community (sadly among hunters too) is the lovely European honey-buzzard. It's a bird with classic raptorial features: large, eagle-like, with broad wings, hooked bill and talons and majestic flight. Many who see their first honey-buzzard soaring overhead are amazed that such birds visit our shores. Honey-buz- zards (M. kuċċarda) do not nest here, indeed most that visit do not even stop, they sail in from the direction of Sicily, but then just gain height again over our warm land, and glide off towards North Af- rica. Those that arrive in late afternoon, however, usually look for a nice spot of woodland where to spend a night. Most opt for the chunk of mature trees at Buskett, but other wooded areas – not least Foresta 2000, which yearly grows and thickens – are also considered suitable stopover B&B. 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 11 OCTOBER 2026 ALMANAC Victor Falzon, Aron Tanti (Photo) Who pays the price for our food?
