Green idea of the week 1043 Don't miss this Give nature a voice. Become a BirdLife member 1043. Sweet Alison IT'S very common and grows most everywhere, flowering profuse- ly. It's starting to show up among the green foliage that appears af- ter a stint of rain, but it's in bloom practically all year. Its ubiquity, however, doesn't render the sweet alison any less sweet. Indeed its explosion of flowers, arranged in spherical clusters of florets – like miniature ortensias – are among its main attractions. The plant is short and delicate but the scores of white pompom-like bouquets that give the plant its Maltese name (buttuniera) will still catch your attention. And if its appearance doesn't, its scent will: a stand of alison will mildly honey-sweeten the air around it. Incidentally the plant wasn't named after any particularly sweet-natured human female called Alison: the word is simply a corruption of alyssum, another name for this plant. 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 18 OCTOBER 2026 ALMANAC Victor Falzon Orange Bike Ride 2026
