maltatoday, SUNDAY, 23 MARCH 2014 55 MIKE TURNER Saracens .............. 5 Kavallieri B ........... 50 OWING to Kavallieri being un- able to field a full team this was played at ten-a-side, which took the spectacle away because set scrums had to be uncontested. Furthermore some 6 of the Kav- allieri 10 had a lot of first team experience, which gave them a huge advantage over the brand new club. The Kavallieri backs were con- siderably faster, man for man, and this gave another big advantage. As it was tens all they had to do was kick into the gap at the back and sprint through. Nevertheless, Saracens made a brave attempt and showed good spirit. The first score was a simple suc- cession of passes which created a space, next came a classic change of pace by Horne to swerve inci- sively through after a strong tack- le on a Saracen had knocked the ball free. Then Debierre was just too fast and ran round the defence; Af- ter this Saracens hit back when Cauchi made a clever break and Galdes finished off with a deter- mined run to score a well deserved try, which boosted their spirit. Kavallieri finished the half with another try by Horne, converted by Griffith, to lead 33-5. Inexperienced but gritt y Sara- cens were learning as they played and only conceded 17 points in the second half, launching several promising attacks of their own but failing to have the necessary finishing skills. The impressive thing about this brand new club of beginners is that they never gave up and were learning all the time. Swieqi Overseas B ..... 14 Sliema Stompers B .... 0 It was a little unfortunate that Overseas seemed to field some First teamers. Stompers started the hungrier and more effec- tive in the loose and spent long periods in the Overseas territory. However the defence held out and despite the pressure Stompers had nothing to show for it. This so often boosts the morale of the defenders and undermines that of the failing attackers. Towards the end of the first half Overseas began to come into the game and on the stroke of half time Briffa made a superb break after snatching up a loose ball, side stepped and jinked past tack- lers and then ran through a weal tackle by Alexander to score and convert his own try<. An absolute psychological blow to Stompers. Throughout the match Overseas had by far the better line out and won a lot of possession. By contrast the Stompers set scrum was best. Stompers suf- fered from backs who took the ball f lat footed, standing still, giv- ing the Overseas defence the ini- tiative time and again, so the hard work of the forwards was often wasted. The final score came from a lovely inside pass by Briffa to Syl- vion coming in from the left wing on the burst, again converted by Briffa. The game ended with Overseas camping on Stompers line for several minutes but they were unable to breach the final defence, but running out deserv- ing winners.
