43 maltatoday, Sunday, 20 aPRIL 2014 Events Banif and MCAST in photography project MSV Life PLC hosts estate planning seminar Line of Duty returns to GO Stars in May Winner of the €250,000 Super 5 Jackpot had faith in winning As part of a two-way project between Banif Bank (Malta) plc and the MCAST Institute of Art and Design, first year students studying location photography as part of their Higher National Diploma in Photography were commis- sioned by the Bank to present a set of digital photos for each lo- cation that the Bank is present in. Banif has been collaborat- ing with MCAST on what are called 'live-cases' – modules that give students the oppor- tunity to work with 'clients' on projects that are simulations of real work situations – with a real brief outlining require- ments, specifications, brand guidelines and so on. The work produced becomes the prop- erty of the Bank, for use in the organisation's publications. The project aims to bridge the gap between education and indus- try, while helping students with op- portunities for exposure. A cohort of eight students, under the guidance of their tutor Joe At- tard, undertook their fieldwork in Attard, Naxxar, San Gwann, St Ju- lian's, Siggiewi, Rabat, St Paul's Bay, Fgura and Qormi. As for shooting in Gozo, the students took the op- portunity to do group field work. In this assignment, students were requested to consider a variety of subjects including nature, people, village activity, urban structures and landmarks, in an attempt to capture the spirit of the locality. The students researched the loca- tions assigned to them. They also went out at different times of the day, to experiment with natural light. "It is vital that our students are given opportunities to test their skills and platforms to expose their work to an audience," said Joe Attard, Photogra- phy Lecturer at MCAST Institute of Art and Design. "These live-cases give them a chance to produce work that has to follow a client brief while taking into consid- eration the company's exigencies. The exercise is a taster of what they will experience in the future. "We are very pleased with the good quality works we have in hand," said Charles Mizzi, Head of Marketing and Communication at Banif. "We will be using the photos to produce some of the Bank's artworks and publications, whilst giving the students due credit and exposure. Our collaboration with the Institute has grown into a very fruitful relationship that has at heart educational opportunities for stu- dents." MSV Life PLC recently hosted an Estate Planning Seminar to over 100 intermediaries, accountants, law- yers and notaries. In collaboration with Mirko Rapa, PWC and Notary Dr Annalise Micallef, Micallef & As- sociates, the seminar discussed the fiscal implications of death and how the use of Wills, Trusts and Life In- surance products can help to resolve many of the issues encountered by heirs. David G Curmi, CEO of MSV Life PLC, explained that MSV was proud to host such an exclusive event which brought together experts from their relevant fields to help ex- plain the many costs and problems which may occur after death, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the myriad of possible solutions. He explained that life insurance and savings contracts issued under the Insurance Business Act were often overlooked in their importance in Estate Planning and that the desig- nation of a beneficiary under such contracts provided numerous advan- tages not found in other contracts. Mr Rapa explained that on death, heirs face an economic burden not just of the deceased's debt obliga- tions but also a liability in terms of the Stamp Duty payable on trans- fer of immovable property. After certain exemptions (e.g. transfer of main residence), heirs would have to pay Stamp Duty of effectively 5% on transfer of property and land, and 2% on transfer of company shares and interests in partnerships (rising to 5% if related to property). Notary Dr Micallef then looked at the various uses of Wills and Trusts in Succession Planning, highlighting the need to prepare in advance in or- der to ensure your assets are passed to your heirs in accordance with your wishes. She explained the problems of dy- ing intestate and the various instru- ments and techniques that could be employed during one's lifetime to mitigate such issues. Stuart Fairbairn, Chief Officer Business Development, MSV Life then concluded the seminar by highlighting the main uses of life insurance products for Estate Plan- ning and in particular the unique advantages of being able to desig- nate a beneficiary to receive the pro- ceeds. The most common use of life insurance is to provide a cash lump sum that can be used by the heirs for whatever purpose they require, for example paying the Stamp Duty ob- ligations without having to sell any of the inherited assets. Fairbairn closed the seminar by confirming that one of the main uses of life insurance products in Estate Planning was through savings and investments products, which when structured correctly, removed assets from the estate and provided heirs with the confidential disposal of liq- uid assets. "I thought that if someone from my family had managed to win a considerable amount of money, why shouldn't I?" The winner explained that she is a regular player of Super 5 and every now and then she manages to guess 3 numbers from the game. "I always had faith that one time it will be my turn to correctly guess all of the 5 numbers!' said the winner. The winner selected the first 3 numbers herself, which symbolized an important event for her, whilst the 2 last numbers were chosen at ran- dom. Asked to recall the first instant reaction she had upon realizing that she had won the Jackpot, the win- ner said that she immediately called one of the closest relatives. The first imminent plans for the winner will be to spend a well-deserved holiday around Europe. The winning ticket was bought from a Maltco's Point of Sale in Slie- ma.
