Editorial - PAGE 9 The gruesome rape of a daughter by a 35-year-old father revealed in court THE Labour Part y is hopeful of a four-seat majorit y if the trans- fer of votes add up, according to their analysts. The bulk of trans- ferable votes from eliminated PN candidate Ray Bugeja, the million- aire turned Nationalist candidate, that could be transferred to PN candidate David Casa rather than Therese Comodini Cachia trailing at 13,647 on the 24th count or on Francis Zammit Dimech at 14,212, means that Comodini Cachia and Zammit Dimech may have lost their chance for a seat. Nonetheless, the number of trans- ferred votes to Casa may get him elected on this count since the quota runs at 35,979 votes. The failure of the PN to acquire a third seat will be a severe blow to PN leader Simon Busuttil. Analysts from both parties at least agreed that PL would defi- nitely have a third MEP repre- senting the Labour Part y, though they were not quite sure who would take the sixth seat. At the time of going to print, Marlene Mizzi 's votes stood at 26,046 on the 24th count. That of Clint Camilleri were running at 23,202 and the incum- bent Joseph Cuschieri – who dur- ing the campaign offered to give up half his MEP wage if elected – stood at 16,530. At the time of going to print, an analysis by Labour Part y monitors in Naxxar suggested that young Gozitan architect, Clint Camill- eri could clinch a seat – which would be quite a feat for the 25- year-old candidate. This depends on how many votes he inherits when Joseph Cuschieri is eliminated. If he receives more than Marlene Mizzi he could have a chance. For three days now, political ac- tivists and press men have set up base in the former Naxxar trade fair grounds. The MediaToday newsroom – which moved lock stock and bar- rel to Naxxar – reports that there were smiling faces on many Labour activists who were hopeful that the acquisition of the fourth seat would serve as a final vindication for Muscat's government policy. On the other hand, the PN was eyeing the third seat as a sweet- ener to an otherwise humiliating defeat after last Sunday's landslide victory by the Labour part y. Over the past few days MaltaTo- day has offered a round-the-clock live blog service on its news por- tal. Battle for the sixth seat INNER party activists have told Mal- taToday that they know that Simon Bu- suttil may not be up to Muscat but that they can't picture a viable replacement as PN party leader at the moment. "If he goes, his two deputy leaders will have to go. The Euro- pean parliamentary elec- tion could not have come at a worse moment. We are in a financial mess and we have not recovered from last year's election." Simon Busuttil was unre- pentant yesterday, lashing out at state TV channel PBS for giving the government an advantage through- out the campaign, and saying that he would not "chicken out". But insiders said there was an over- whelming dislike on the ground for Simon Busuttil by PN supporters, with insiders feeling helpless about how their leader is faring. Party activists talking to MaltaToday said that Beppe Fenech Adami was the natural replacement, but Fenech Ada- mi has already told close aides that he will not entertain any such ideas. On the other hand, as the day pro- gressed, PN activists were absorbed with the probability of a sixth seat going to the PN, relieving them from some of the political fallout. One MP told MaltaToday that Mus- cat had "peaked too early", and that this would serve as an advantage to the PN. But with such a staggering difference and a well-oiled party in government, it appears that Muscat is unstoppable.
