maltatoday, SUNDAY, 27 JULY 2014 THIS WEEK 28 MALTA ARTS FESTIVAL – WEEK FOUR AUGUST 2 Pjazza Kino Three nights of cinema under the stars at Pjazza Teatru Rjal. This year's selection is entitled 'Sea Stories' and brings together three sea-themed, award winning European films to Malta. With the participation of the filmmakers, Pjazza Kino will bring people together to watch the films, discuss them and bring new insights. Curated by the Director of 'Simshar', Rebecca Cremona. JULY 27, 30, AUGUST 1 Il-Kappillan ta' Malta L-Istaġun tat-Teatru Malti presents Nicholas Monsarrat's bestselling novel The Kappillan of Malta in an adaptation for the stage by Immanuel Mifsud at Fort St Elmo, Valletta at 21:00. This spectacular performance will be held at Pjazza d'Armi at Fort St Elmo. It will feature Italo-Maltese actor Pino Scicluna. Produced by Sean Buhagiar and Mario Philip Azzopardi. Entrance is at €15, concessions €10. JULY 31 – AUGUST 1 Triple Bill A triple bill of duets at Pjazza Teatru Rjal. The programme is intended to create a link between emerging Maltese practitioners and established international artists or companies. There is also an exciting emphasis on male dance artists, from dancers and choreographers. Duets are made up of: Brenda Lee Grech (Malta/ Glasgow) & Victor Zarallo (Spain/ Glasgow), Mavin Khoo & Luke Divall (UK) and Gregory Maqoma (South Africa) & Roberto Olivan (Spain). Events begin at 21:30, entrance is at €15, concessions €10. AUGUST 2 MPO Closing Concert The closing concert of the Malta Arts Festival will feature the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Mro Brian Schembri, at the Mediterranean Conference Centre. The programme includes Elgar's cello concerto featuring cellist Alexander Kniazev and Petrouchka by Igor Stravinsky. The concert will also premier a new work by Maltese composer Karl Fiorini. The event begins at 21:00, Dress circle €20, stalls €15, concessions €10. THEATRE JULY 30 The Merchant of Venice Annual summer Shakespeare production by MADC at San Anton Gardens, Balzan at 21:00. Directed by Joe Friggieri. Cast includes Philip Leone Ganado, Coryse Borg, Steve Hili, Francesca Briffa, Alex Gatesy Lewis, Maxine Aquilina, Annelise Abela, Joe Zammit, John Marinelli, Luke Mercieca, Joe Despasquale, David Chircop, Chris Spiteri, Rambert Attard, Anton Saliba, Janelle Caruana, Diandra Anne Mamo and Stephen Galea. VISUAL ARTS CONTINUES BY APPOINTMENT Retrospective by Norbert Attard Retrospective exhibition by artist Norbert Attard at Gozo Contemporary, 11, Mongur Street, Gharb, Gozo. Art works spanning 40 years will be on display. These include Attard's early paintings, drawings and lino cuts from the formative years, limited edition prints (including the Walled Cities, Mihrab and Kimono series) and abstract paintings from the 1970s, 80s, 90s, and photographic prints and sculptures, from his most recent conceptual phase. UNTIL AUGUST 22 Music, Dance and Landscapes by Jeni Caruana Exhibition of paintings by Jeni Caruana at Palazzo de Piro, Mdina. Featuring paintings done live at various musical events. JULY 26 – AUGUST 22 Paġni - Pass the Parcel Paġni, an exhibition in the main hall at St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity in Valletta, is a result of the project Pass the Parcel, which was organised with Y.O.U.R.S. (Young Offenders Unit Rehabilitation Services) and Female residents at Corradino Correctional Facility. This project started back in October 2013 and is supported by Fondazzjoni Ċentru Għall-Kreattività and Premju tal-President Għall-Kreattività. Entrance is free. JULY 12 – AUGUST 24 Ġgantija 2013 Project - Final WHAT'S ON Actor Manuel Cauchi played the role of Shylock in MADC's The Merchant of Venice before a packed audience at San Anton Gardens on Wednesday, the opening night. After the show a surprise 60th birthday celebration was organised by the backstage crew. Cauchi's performance was a carefully studied and modulated interpretation that gripped the audience revealing to them new facets of this most complex character.
