Dunlins are small shorebirds that breed way up north in the treeless and midge-infested tundra of the arctic and subarctic. So what would a Dunlin be doing, right now, dipping its long curved beak in the mud at Salina, with the jarring noise of the Coast Road project nearby? Is it lost? Is it injured? It is not lost at all, and while injured birds are no rarity in our hunter-infested land, it's actually normal for Dunlin to turn up at this time of year, completely in synch with their natural rhythms. Although our own breeding birds are still raising family, many Dunlins (M: Pispisella tad-Dabra) will by now have done their bit of parenting for the season and already winging south for the winter. What! July and already thinking of winter? Well, arctic summers are short, so once their young are edged there is no point in lingering and wait for bad weather, especially considering the marathon journey still ahead. These birds have been perfecting this strategy since at least the last Ice Age. No wonder they're good at it. Text Victor Falzon Photo Aron Tanti 414. DUNLIN GREEN IDEA OF THE WEEK 316: MAKING SANDWICHES FOR LUNCH? - What's better for the environment, aluminium foil or Clingfilm? Sadly, both require a huge amount of energy and resources in their production. So use your loaf, and wrap in compostable greaseproof paper. Or pop your panini into a reusable container instead. The overall purpose of this target is to increase knowledge, the science base and technologies relating to biodiversity. This target should be regarded as a general commitment to increase the amount and quality of biodiversity relevant information and technologies as well as to make better use of it in decision making as well as to share it as widely as possible. It specifically calls for information on the values, functioning and the status and trends of biodiversity. It also takes into consideration the consequences of biodiversity loss. The overall purpose of this target is to increase the amount and quality of information and tools at the disposal of policy makers and the general public. All countries need information to identify threats to biodiversity and determine priorities for conservation and sustainable use. While nearly all Parties report that they are taking actions related to monitoring and research, most also indicate that the absence or difficulty in accessing relevant information is an obstacle to the implementation of the goals of the Convention. As part of its national obligations Malta targets that by 2020, knowledge, the science base and technologies relating to biodiversity, its values, functioning, status and trends, and the consequences of its loss, are improved and applied. by 2020, the contribution of local communities/entities to the sustainable management of biodiversity is recognised and enhanced.
