32 RESTO OF THE WEEK maltatoday, SUNDAY, 14 SEPTEMBER 2014 NENU'S in Valletta is a tradi- tional style bakery that doubles as a restaurant serving traditional dishes from the past - particular- ly the Maltese ftira stuffed with a variety of ingredients, baked in the oven and served like a pizza. Sticking to the original recipe is what keeps dishes traditional, particularly so with bread, and the bastardisation of bread reci- pes has led to a large number of substandard variations of the Maltese loaf. Ta' Nenu is a showcase of the things we do well in Malta, where bread is at the centre of every- thing as it goes well with olive oil, tomatoes and honey. The wine list consists of only local wines and if you're after a Coke then this not the right place to find it, with only Maltese Kinnie on the menu. Both locals and tourists can get involved in the baking proc- ess and make their own ftiras at the bakery. Supplied with bread dough and other ingredients, pa- trons can decide on how best they like their bread and make it them- selves. The baker will then bake the bread and serve it to patrons. Ftiras from the menu have been named after characters in Qor- mi, the home of many a Maltese baker. Other traditional dishes include aljotta, soppa tal-armla, imqarrun fil-forn, stuffat tal-qar- nit, fenek moqli and laham fuq il-f war. Nenu is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 to 22:45 and for Sunday lunch. Vines are planted on the old Mendoza riverbed, where the stony soils are ideally suited for Malbec. Finca Flichman has some superb sites around the city of Mendoza and gets tremendous quality into the bottle. One of Flichman's top wines, combining the unique characteristics of two terroirs in a single grape variety. Tupungato at 1,100m altitude gives freshness and structure while Barrancas, at 700m, adds colour and density. Aged for over 6 months in American and French oak. An intense red colour leads to aromas of plums combined with delicate oak, spices and chocolate. Red berry fruit continues on the palate where it is met with a hint of herbal spice. A complex wine and a perfect match with steak or rich sausages. Alternatively, at the end of a meal with a chocolate filled pudding. Exclusively imported by Charles Grech & Co.
