maltatoday, SUNDAY, 28 SEPTEMBER 2014 35 THIS WEEK THE project seeks to generate in- formation and analysis on the use of spaces for cultural purposes. Direct project deliverables include (i) a map of each locality in Malta and Gozo, based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology and (ii) an analysis of contemporary cul- tural activity in relation to the use of these same spaces. The first phase of the project, which included the mapping of cul- tural places and spaces through GIS, will be completed in the coming weeks. To this end, the Foundation is holding public consultation meet- ings to review the data that has been collected by the University of Malta and submit feedback. Photo by Tomoko Goto MUZA designs announced DESIGNS for MUŻA, the Valletta 2018 flagship project, have been an- nounced and will be on display dur- ing Notte Bianca. The designs are the winning project for MUŻA – the new Na- tional Museum of Art at Auberge d'Italie, chosen from amongst 18 submissions presented by Maltese, international and multinational consortia. This project, together with all the other submissions pre- sented, will be on exhibition at Au- berge d'Italie from October 4 to 21. The chosen project was present- ed by a multinational team; DTR, CYAN Engineering and Martello Media. DTR is a Maltese multi- disciplinary firm with particular expertise in architectural design for local context and historic contexts, civil and structural engineering and interior design. Cyan Engineering is a Maltese company specialised in merging contemporary building designs within historic contexts and Martello Media is an Irish multi- disciplinary team specialising in exhibition design and interpretative planning. The team also includes additional Maltese expertise who will be working in tandem with Heritage Malta's recognised special- ists on this new museum typology, purposely developed for Malta. The project will lead to the devel- opment of a new national institution for the visual arts in Malta (EU). The acronym MUŻA stands for Mużew Nazzjonali tal-Arti (Maltese for Na- tional Museum of Fine Arts), but also refers to the Muses, the mytho- logical figures inspiring the arts and the etymological source of the word museum. MUŻA is also the Maltese word for inspiration. This design may be considered for European Union part financing within the Operational Programmes for Malta Cohesion Policy 2014 – 2020.
