Moenchengladbach - Paderborn 17:30 Werder Bremen - Wolfsburg Wayne Rooney brace downs Sunderland WAYNE Rooney's match-winning double in Manchester United 's 2-0 victory against Sunderland was overshadowed by a case of mistaken identit y. The England captain opened the scoring from the penalt y spot in the 66th minute after Falcao had been pulled back by John O'Shea. But, instead of sending off the Irishman, referee Roger East showed a red card to his fel- low former United defender Wes Brown. East later told the body respon- sible for officiating standards in English football it was not a case of mistaken identit y when he sent off Brown. Rooney added a second six min- utes from time, and the win was enough to lift United above Arse- nal and back into third in the Bar- clays Premier League table ahead of the Gunners' clash with Ever- ton on Sunday. In the early game, former West Ham boss Alan Pardew enjoyed his return to Upton Park as his Crystal Palace side came away with a 3-1 victory. Glenn Murray gave the visitors the lead four minutes before half- time, although his header certain- ly would not have found the net had Aaron Cresswell not made a horrendous mess of an attempted clearance. A header from Scott Dann six minutes after the break doubled Palace's lead and Murray then headed in a third before his after- noon ended early with a second yellow card seeing the forward dismissed. Enner Valencia pulled one back for West Ham 14 minutes from time but that was as good as it got for Sam Allardyce's stuttering side. At the bottom of the table, West Brom pulled further clear of the relegation zone with a 1-0 vic- tory over Southampton thanks to Saido Berahino's goal in only the second minute. Along with Sunderland, there were defeats for three other mem- bers of the bottom six, all of them 1-0. Tim Sherwood is still searching for his first point as Aston Villa manager after Papiss Cisse net- ted the only goal of the game for Newcastle in the 37th minute at St James' Park. A Kieran Trippier own goal condemned Burnley to a home loss against Swansea, while Peter Crouch equalled Alan Shearer's Premier League record of 46 head- ed goals seconds after coming on as a substitute as Stoke needed only one goal to beat Hull. Marsa to face Melita in final THE Winter Wallop game between the Melita Bees and the Krishna Kobras, which had been postponed twice, was finally played yesterday. The Kobras, needing a victory to make it into the Grand Final, en- tered the game without their strike bowler/batsman Bikram Arora, Opening batsman Malcolm Crab- be and all rounder Justin Farrin- Thorne. The Kobras won the toss and bat- ted first. Unfortunately they were bowled out for 94 runs and only lasted 18 overs. Mike Caruana was the highest scorer with 45 runs (his highest score in the tournament) which included six fours. Extras were next highest with 30, had the Bees been more accurate with their bowling the game would have finished much earlier. Tony Slater bowling his slow deliver- ies managed to take two wickets, including the important wicket of Nowell Khosla who tried to hit the ball down the ground, only manag- ing to slice the ball into the hands of Garrett Kampff at mid off. San- jay Patel, Ian Pendelbury and Cal Madden all took a wicket each. Daniel Galea bowled well for his two overs, The Bees made the required runs in 15 overs. It was not a complete walk in the park, from two for 87 runs they managed to lose four wickets before the victory. Earlier Matt McKeogh set up the win with a f lawless batting style, making 34 runs from 30 balls and then having to retire. Joy Ghoseroy also batted well for his 19 runs and new boy Cal Madden chipped in with 15. Amy Caruana impressed taking two wickets, one of the great Tim Wheeler who holed out to cover and the other of Madden who tried to hit the ball out of the ground, missing and watching the ball hit his stumps. Mike Caruana took two wickets while Nowell Khosla and John Grima (who took off his keeping gloves) took a wicket each. Grima also bowled the only maid- en of the game. The Marsa Magpies were content with the result as now they will be facing the Bees in the final on March 14. This coming weekend the first touring team arrives, Beckenham CC, from England and will be playing a two game series against Marsa C.C., starting on Friday. On Saturday the Sunoco Cricket academy/nursery will be from 9 till 10:30am. Manchester United's Wayne Rooney celebrates his first goal
