The Swiss firm said in a statement that it is working towards an Air Operators Certificate (AOC) from the Civil Aviation Directorate in Malta, which it expects to receive during the third quarter of this year. The Malta operation is an ideal complement to the company's Swiss and German operations and a very strategic addition to its aircraft management and charter business in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, according to Jorg Reuthinger, senior vice president and general manager of Jet Aviation aircraft management and charter operations in EMEA and Asia. "By adding an additional AOC in the European Union, Jet Aviation customers benefit from further flexibility in their choice of registrations and operation." Jarka Sommeregger, the CEO of Luxury Business Jets, said a B737-700 (BBJ1) and an Embraer Legacy 600 will be operated under the new Maltese AOC of Jet Aviation (Malta). Aside from its Swiss and nascent Maltese units, Jet Aviation also operates Avjet (Burbank) and Jet Aviation Flight Services (Teterboro) in the United States. Jet Aviation signed a joint venture agreement to establish an aircraft management and charter operation in Malta Panama cuts ties with Taiwan Panama has cut long-standing dip- lomatic ties with Taiwan and es- tablished relations with China, in a diplomatic coup for Beijing. China and Panama issued a joint statement saying they would immediately establish ambassador-level relations. The Panamanian government said it recognised there was "only one China" and considered Taiwan part of it. In retaliation, Taiwan expressed "anger and regret", and accused Panama of "bullying". China regards Taiwan as a breakaway province. A few countries maintain ties with Taipei instead of Beijing, and Panama is the latest to switch sides. Taiwan's foreign ministry said it will remove its diplomatic staff from Panama City and halt bilateral cooperation efforts. The ministry issued a statement accusing Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela of "caving in" to economic pressure from mainland China. In December last year, the African island nation of Sao Tome and Principe made a similar move. Now only 20 countries have diplomatic relations with Taiwan. China is a major client of the Panama Canal and crucial investor in Panama's development. Most nations, including the U.S., already recognize China as the legitimate government. But the mainland government has stepped up pressure to isolate Taiwan since President Tsai Ing- wen took office a year ago. She has promised to uphold the status quo between China and Taiwan but has raised concerns in Beijing that she could ultimately endorse a path toward independence. Taiwan, an island nation of 23 million people across the Taiwan Strait from China, was established following a civil war in 1949. The Taipei government has steadfastly maintained its independence while the communist government ruling China's 1.3 billion people consider them part of one nation.
