Any enquiries : juransara@gmail.com Only 150 sixth form students studying foreign languages TIM DIACONO EDUCATION minister Evarist Bartolo has sounded concern at the low rate of sixth form stu- dents who opt for a foreign lan- guage as one of their subjects. Addressing a press confer- ence held to launch this year's Junior College prospectus, Bar- tolo said that only around 150 post-secondary students are studying foreign languages as one of their five optional sub- jects. In one particular sixth form, only one student is cur- rently studying Italian. "The situation is worrying, and we must make sure that language learners and lan- guage teachers don't become an endangered species," he said. "As important as English is as a global language, other languages are also important. You could be a fully qualified doctor or engineer but then have to turn down a placement in Paris, Berlin or Madrid be- cause you wouldn't know the language." Bartolo hailed a recent pilot project by the Malta Classics Association that is teaching Latin to Year 5 students outside school hours. "The programme has been successful so far and parents are also engaging in the class- es," he said. Bartolo also said that human- ities subjects, such as classical studies, must be taught more intently throughout earlier ed- ucation. "We have grown used to the idea that education is equiva- lent to employability, but the values taught in the humanities are also important." Only around 150 post-secondary students are studying foreign languages as one of their five optional subjects Private land falling under proposed public domain sites will retain title Parliamentary secretary for planning Chris Agius reassures private land owners that public domain legislation will not impinge upon their rights MIRIAM DALLI LAND which is private and falls within any of the 24 sites being proposed as public domain will retain their private title, parlia- mentary secretary for planning Chris Agius has said. Addressing his first media conference at the Planning Au- thority in Floriana, Agius reiter- ated that "what belongs to the private sector will remain so". The Planning Authority is currently receiving feedback as part of the six-week consulta- tion process on the 24 sites be- ing proposed as public domain: 16 of the sites were proposed by Flimkien Ghal Ambjent Ahjar, seven sites were proposed by Friends of the Earth and one site, the park at Nwadar, was proposed by Environment Min- ister Jose Herrera. Whilst welcomed by many, and with parliamentary support, the law has hunters and trap- pers concerned. Multiple meet- ings have been held between the FKNK and the junior minister as the hunting federation seeks to protect its members' rights. FKNK has been urging its mem- bers, land owners or not, to send in their objections to the Plan- ning Authority. With data held by the PA and the Lands Department, the au- thority is in the process of gath- ering information on who owns the areas of land within the 24 sites. Different records are held by the two entities and the PA is also holding one-to-one meet- ings with citizens who want to verify whether their land, or the land they work, falls in any of the designated sites. If a land belongs to a third par- ty, and this is missed during the consultation period and the pre- paratory work, PA CEO Johann Buttigieg said the government would then need to seek the ad- vice of the Attorney General. Asked whether the PA was considering compensation for individuals with land in the sites, Buttigieg reiterated that the gov- ernment had no intention of im- pinging upon anyone's rights. "Rights will be respected and it will then be up to parliament to decide what it wants to do," he said, adding that if the need arose, there were laws that regu- lated compensation. The sites being considered for public domain classification are: Site at Manoel Island Site at Wied Garnaw Site at Hondoq, Qala Site at Kalanka, Delimara Site of three historic landmark trees, Ta' Xbiex Site of beaches from St George's Bay to Sliema Sites at Valletta coastline and Fort St Elmo Sites from St Thomas Bay (Marsascala) to Xrobb l-Ghagin (Marsaxlokk) Sites from Siggiewi to Zurrieq Sites: Pinetum beyond Floriana fortification walls and Argotti, St Philips and Sa Masion Public Gardens Stretch of land from Gnejna to Mtahleb Villa Guardamangia, Pieta Site at Simblija Comino Citadella, Victoria, Gozo Site at Ta Cenc, Sannat Site at Has-Saptan and Wied Zembaq Site at Is-Simblija (including Wied ir-Rum, Ta' Baldu and Wied Hazrun) Site at Il-Ballut tal-Wardija Site at il-Ballut tal-Imgiebah (l/o Mellieha) Site at Ras ir-Raheb and Qlejgha Site at Fomm ir-Rih Comino Nwadar National Park The Cittadella has been included on Malta's tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1998
