MALTATODAY STAFF IT was a close contest, but Adrian Delia was clear- ly on top as the votes started being tallied by the counters. The foyer at the Nationalist Party headquarters in Pietà burst into massive cheer, confirming that the newcomer, who has already fallen out with what he slammed as the 'party establishment', had over- come his first hurdle. With the PN's General Coun- cil's members putting him through to a final run- off, Delia will now face the vote of the PN's 22,000 paid-up members - the first ever popular election for a Maltese political party leader - and where the fiery lawyer seems to have found widespread ac- claim. Two of his parliamentary supporters, Hermann Schiavone and Clyde Puli were visibly euphoric at yesterday's result. It was a sign that even in the face of the PN's ethics investigation into the Jersey offshore account, Delia had won over the councillors.
