maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 1 AUGUST 2018 14 THE sixth edition of The Three Palaces Festival will place, giv- ing more emphasis on youth artistes. One of the highlights of this festival will be an opera aimed specifically for children, entitled Il-Qtates ta' max-Xatt. Based on a book written by Clare Azzopardi, and adapted as a score by talented young composer Euchar Gravina, this opera, which will be directed by Denise Mulholland, will do the rounds around many schools so that within five years, it is hoped it will serve as an expe- rience and as an inspiration to young, budding talents. Youth contribution in this fes- tival will also include Charlene Farrugia, who is considered as the enfant terrible of the Mal- tese piano and an internation- ally renowned artiste in her own right. Her contribution to this year's edition of this festival will be a solo performance. Ian Ellul, violinist and member of the Malta Youth Orchestra and soprano Michaela Agius are also two more emerging youth exponents at this festival and this year, they will team up for a presentation of popular and less popular works at the Malta Society of Arts in Valletta. The National Archaeology Museum will host Maltese so- prano Claire Debono, a gradu- ate from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, who will be accompanied by pianist Gary Matthewman, as well as a con- cert by O Duo, who have kept a very youthful zest through their marimba and percussive presentations and moreover, their experiences abroad over the past two decades. This World Heritage Site will also host The Stockholm Philhar- monic Wind Quintet, as well as Phantasm, an award winning consort of viols, and Les Musi- cians de Louvre, considered by The Guardian as one of the best orchestras in the world, as well as veteran, multi-talented mu- sician Dominic Galea, who will be leading a jazz trio for this oc- casion. Austria will be represented by the Koncz String Trio which pertains to the much revered Vienna Philharmonic Orches- tra. Their performance, which relates to its deep association with the history and tradition of European classical music will further add to this Festi- val's own rich historical back- ground. The Three Palaces Festival will happen between the 2nd and the 11th November. CULTURE Brass House Unit launch their very first single ON Monday, the established brass band Brass House Unit officially released their first ever single in anticipation of the very first album set to be launched next year. Their sin- gle called 'Limelight' is a reflec- tion of the band's vision and style and is the result of their take and development of the 'funk' sound. Through Lime- light they are attempting to bring 'funk' back to the masses and to show off their 16-piece brass brand and their two for- midable voices Ozzy Lino & Gloriana. Together with the new single they also released a music video that reflects the period and vision of the song. The youth factor in The Three Palaces Festival Family Ties: a comedy about missing wills, rival cousins and ghostly brides WHAT happens when a wealthy uncle dies, with his will nowhere to be found, and his two nephews, who share no love for one anoth- er, decide to embark on a night- time illicit search of his haunted house? Family Ties, a comedy to be staged next week at the Univer- sity of Malta, will entertain this scenario. When rich Uncle Wilfred dies, two cousins, Anthony and Za- ren, find themselves unable to locate his will, leaving the vast fortune tied up with bureaucrat- ic red tape. The two cousins, who do not like each other, decide to break into their deceased uncle's re- mote house and look for a copy of his last will and testament. If the will is in their favour, they intend to use it, if not, they will destroy it. One stormy night both cou- ples break into the old house to carry out their mean plan, with neither of them expecting the other to be there. They also didn't expect that their old uncle's tales of a ghost- ly bride wandering the rooms at night would turn out to be true. Family Ties, which is appro- priate for persons 16 or older, will be performed on 11 and 12 August at 9pm in Car Park 4 at the University of Malta Msida Campus. Warning: strobe lights will be used during the play. Tickets can be purchased from ticketline.com.mt/events.aspx.
