17 COMMERCIAL maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 1 AUGUST 2018 KFC Malta adopts a no straws policy Marnisi Organic wins gold award KFC Malta are proud to cham- pion the No Straws Movement following the roll-out of the campaign at KFC Singapore. As from last week KFC Malta will no longer serve the plastic lid and straw with drinks. The exception to this policy is for take-away and drive through drinks that will require the lid and straw for practical pur- poses. KFC feel led to champion this motion as part of their effort to reduce single-use plastics and help the environment. Every little bit counts and KFC is do- ing it one straw at a time. KFC urges their customers to join them in this meaningful jour- ney. Kurt Micallef, Business Man- ager of Food Chain said he was proud to see KFC Malta launch this campaign. "After being the first restau- rant chain to start donating our food to charity we felt we had to act and contribute to the devastating effect plastic is having on the environment. We are proud and excited to be able to come together as a team and help contribute in saving the planet one straw at a time," he said. KFC is operated in Malta by Food Chain Limited, a member of the Farsons Group. Follow KFC Malta on Facebook: www. facebook.com/KFCmalta or visit www.kfc.com.mt. Gold medal for the first Maltese Organic premium wine at the International Organic Wine Awards 2018 MARSOVIN has just been awarded a Gold medal for its Marnisi Organic vintage 2016. The result has been re- ceived with great delight from the Marsovin winery team as news of the results have been received only a month after the wine has been officially released on the market. Mars- ovin's Marnisi 2016 is the first Maltese wine falling in the premium wine category to be certified and awarded the of- ficial seal of 'Organic Wine'. The medal has been awarded at the International Organic Wine Awards 2018 organ- ised by Wine System AG in Germany. Marnisi 2016 has competed with another 1086 wines coming from 28 differ- ent countries. Marsovin Winery CEO, Jer- emy Cassar said the company was very proud of this award in particular as Marnisi had competed with other wines which have been produced as 'organic' for a number of years. "We are happy that Marnisi has managed to win a gold in its first year of release as an organic wine," he said. "We are taking this achievement as an official recognition to the hard work by all involved to convert the vines and wine to organic, whilst retaining the premium quality stand- ards of this wine." The organic conversion pro- cess began with the applica- tion of organic farming prac- tices at the Marnisi Estate in Marsaxlokk, where an area covering 2.8 hectares makes this the largest expanse of organically-farmed vines anywhere in Malta. In order to have organically-grown grapes, Marsovin's viticul- turists engaged in an entirely different set of practices to maintain their vines. Fol- lowing the successful vine- yard conversion period, the harvested grapes were trans- ferred to the winery, where an alternative winemaking approach was employed to focus on the use of a specific list of ingredients used for or- ganic vinification. The 2016 vintage was char- acterised by warmer-than- normal temperatures and drier weather during the winter months, followed by relatively mild temperatures throughout summer. These elements allowed for very good grape maturity and, thus, an exceptional vintage year. The resultant wine, Marnisi 2016, portrays a concentrated, complex and layered wine that is very ap- proachable in its infancy and will keep drinking well in the years to come.
