maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 16 JANUARY 2019 22 SPORTS MOTOCROSS THIS coming Sunday, the As- socjazzjoni Sport Muturi u Karozzi will be organising the second meeting of the Woto- Moto 2018/2019 National Enduro Championship. This event will be held at Fawwara quarry and is set to begin at 10am. Last Sunday the Associa- tion held its third event of the 2018/2019 National Au- tocross Championship spon- sored by Pasta Poiatti. This event with Autocross cars was held at the ASMK Sports Complex of Ta' Qali and be- gan at 10am. 15 competitors divided into the Modified and Standard Classes raced the challenge. In the Modified Class Joseph Micallef on his Opel Corsa dominated the Heats by win- ning two Heats from the three available so he assured his place in the Class A Final. The drivers who also qualified for this class were Melo Zam- mit and Terence Azzopardi, both on Opel Corsa cars, the Ford Fiesta of Ryan Scicluna and Noel Zammit on his Fiat Punto. From the Start of this final we saw Noel Zammit mak- ing a very good launch ahead of Micallef and Scicluna but during the second Lap Me- lo Zammit made use of the Joker Lap and took the lead but all were wondering what was to happen if Micallef and Azzopardi took the Joker Lap. The challenge continued as all the competitors did their best during this hot race Fi- nal. Towards the end of this race we saw Azzopardi tak- ing the Joker Lap followed by Noel Zammit and both driv- ers gained one placing each. Besides all this Melo Zammit won this race Final while his Opel Corsa engine switched itself off due to engine dam- aged only a few metres away from the Finish Flag. Melo was followed by Azzopardi and by Noel Zammit while fourth place finisher was Mi- callef and Scicluna finished in fifth place. In Class B Final saw to Ivan Birmingham on his Suzuki Swift, Joseph Spiteri on his Opel Corsa, the Opel Nova of Richard Spiteri, Nicolai Aqui- lina on an Opel Corsa and the Ford Fiesta of Theo Micallef. From the Start of this Fi- nal we saw Micallef making a good start and taking the helm of the race followed by Aquilina and Joseph Spiteri. In the first round the final- ists who made use of the Joker Lap were Micallef and Joseph Spiteri who were the first drivers who took advan- tage of this Joker Lap to fur- ther increase the gap over the other competitors. During the fourth Lap Birmingham made use of the Joker Lap and fin- ished ahead of Joseph. During the fifth Lap leader Micallef engine developed a fault in the cooling system and had to withdraw from the race. Thus Aquilina took the lead and se- cured this placing to the race finish. The race was won by Nik Aquilina a young driver who competed in Autocross for the first time. Ivan Bir- mingham won second place and Joseph Spiteri finished in third place. Fourth place was won by Richard Spiteri while Micallef finished fifth. The Standard Start Line was composed of Jerom Peplow on his Kia Avella, Nicovich Chircop on a Peugeot 106, the Citroen AX of Melvin Butti- gieg, Kyle Agius on his Opel Nova and Quinn Camilleri on a new Citroen Saxo. From the start we saw a fast launch by Chircop along side with Agius but Chircop took the helm of the race after the first right turn while being followed by Agius and Buttigieg. Shortly after the first corner we saw Agius making slight contact with the rear of Chricop's car and this resulted in the latter over-turning off-track in his Peugeot. This move made the referee suspend Agius from the race. Following this acci- dent Buttigieg took the lead ahead of Camilleri and Pep- low. Following this accident there were no changes in the drivers placings so the result sheet shows Buttigieg win- ning the race ahead of Camill- eri and Peplow. Chircop was placed In fourth place.
