4 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 20 FEBRUARY 2022 NEWS ELECTION 2022 MATTHEW VELLA NATIONALIST leader Bernard Grech has switched electoral dis- tricts in a bid to prop up an im- poverished 12th district constit- uency, starved of PN candidates. His eleventh-hour decision means he will not contest in the south, where it was expect- ed that he would run in the 5th district, from where he hails, Birżebbugia. Instead, he will run in both the 11th and 12th districts, tra- ditionally Nationalist strong- holds in which former PN leader Simon Busuttil both contested in 2017. The 12th district also has the largest expected number of non-voters, which Grech will be targeting in a bid to bolster the Nationalists' vote. In 2017, the district returned three Na- tionalist MPs and two Labour MPs. Grech shifts to 12th district in hunt for non-voters CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 "Government still plans on building a new campus for the Institute for Tourism Studies (ITS) at Smart City and even- tually this will sit side by side with the AUM campus that will be developed by Sadeen Education," the sources said. The same sources indicated that Smart City remains com- mitted to developing the re- maining area in Kalkara. The Maltese government has a mi- nority shareholding in Smart City. The site of a former indus- trial estate, the area between Kalkara and Xgħajra was origi- nally directly granted to Dubai government-owned Tecom In- vestments in 2007 for the crea- tion of an ICT and media park. However, the development missed several targets over the years and large parts of the site remain undeveloped. The finalised agreements with Smart City and AUM were discussed in Cabinet last week and are expected to be tabled in parliament for con- sideration by the National Au- dit Office Accounts Commit- tee that deals with public land transfers. AUM will relinquish its title on land at Żonqor Point, where it had to build a fully-fledged university campus for 4,000 students, and a public car park in Bormla, which was going to be developed into a dormitory. The Żonqor area included the former national swimming pool and a tract of land outside the development zone. The proposed project had sparked protests when it was AUM land swap: ITS will still get campus on Smart City
