maltatoday | SUNDAY • 8 OCTOBER 2023 7 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 887. Booted Eagle CONTRARY to what many think, eagles don't all live in remote mountains spending their days soaring majestically around the peaks. Some of them migrate long distances, across many habitats, including sea and even small overpopulated islands! Of the six or so species recorded in Malta, some are rarely seen while others are spotted annually in very small numbers. One of the rarer visitors is the booted eagle (M. ajkla tal-kalzetti). Booted eagles nest mostly in wooded areas in various regions of Europe but come autumn most of them fly to Africa, which is when we get to see them sometimes. One such specimen turned up some days ago in the Buskett-Girgenti area. The poor creature ran the usual gauntlet of lead from our ma- cho hunters, and was last seen winging offshore towards Africa. One hopes it made it safely across. Malta Meat Free Week 2023 Get ready for the much-anticipated 6th edition of Malta Meat Free Week, an annual event that celebrates the joy of plant-based living! Malta Meat Free Week is organised by VeggieMalta and will be run- ning from the 16th to the 22nd of October. The festivities kick off even earlier, with participating supermarkets offering an array of plant- based brands starting from the 9th of October, setting the stage for a week of delicious and sustainable dining experiences. While one week without meat can make a difference, it's important to recognize that long-term dietary choices have a more substantial and lasting impact on the environment. Therefore, adopting a more permanent reduction in meat consumption or incorporating more plant-based meals into your diet can have even greater environmental benefits. The major TV series Blade Runner 2099 is will no longer be filmed in Northern Ireland, it has been confirmed. The series, based on the iconic films, was due to be shot in Belfast. Northern Ireland Screen's Chief Executive Richard Williams said his organisation was "extremely disappointed" at the change.
