4 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 12 JULY 2024 NEWS Unless they're an experienced diver, the average visitor to the Maltese Islands may not know that this might be their golden opportunity to try diving for the first time, because Gozo is in fact one of the most popular diving sports globally. There are more than a dozen dive sites in Gozo, accessible from the coast, including a variety of marvelous caves and wrecks. Some of the most famous sites include the Blue Hole, the Inland Sea and Ghasri Cave. Did you know? THE sixth edition of the Gozo Food Festival is taking place today and tomorrow, in Xewk- ija Square. This food festival will con- sist of two nights of culinary celebrations from across the world, allowing attendees to sample the goodness of Asian food, the quality of Medi- terranean cuisine, the best European dishes and the au- thenticity of Gozitan food. In fact, around 20 exhibitors will be serving the best food from various countries around the world. This is an excellent opportunity to celebrate the Maltese summer on the island of Gozo. The Minister for Gozo and Planning, Clint Camilleri Clint Camilleri said that this is a street food festival with a focus on inclusivity as a variety of culinary items will be available in one location. "It is another event expected by many that year after year continues to attract numerous attendees, in a wonderful set- ting with a festive approach" he said. "I welcome everyone to join us for this year's edition of the Gozo Food Festival which will feature a variety of foods from around the world. This festi- val, together with many other activities that will be organised have the support of the Minis- try for Gozo and Planning be- cause we believe that these are initiatives that offer added val- ue to those who choose Gozo as their destination and are an integral part of our vibrant culture" said the Minister for Gozo and Planning. This year the organisers are focusing more on versatility, with over 100 different dishies from around the world being served by many participants. There will also be a special area dedicated for children, complete with appropriate food, games and attractions. Admission to the festival is free. Despite being governed by a masterplan that outlines where tables and chairs can be put out, restaurants and establishments clogged the square, in a veritable takeover. Can. Curmi had said that it was unaccept- able to see public land being abused in this way, while citizens organising weddings and funerals at the church were being forced to obtain permits for the removal of the tables and chairs. Often, in spite of the permits, guests still end up navigating numerous obstacles in the square on the day of the wedding or funeral, he had said. Thursday morning's operation ensured that only table and chairs indicated in the existing masterplan are placed in the square, freeing up valuable public space. Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri told sister newspaper MaltaToday that until an up- dated masterplan is drawn up for the area, the authorities will ensure the existing pa- rameters are respected.
