maltatoday | SUNDAY • 15 SEPTEMBER 2024 5 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 936. Black Tern EVERYBODY knows seagulls: big, white, noisy coastal birds. But there's a similar, closely related but much less familiar group: the terns. Terns too are relatively large, white, coastal birds but they have a slimmer, more elegant build. Their flight is lighter and more buoyant than the gulls' and their tail is always forked to some de- gree. Nine tern species occur on migration in Malta, none of which are common. One of these is the black tern (M. ċirlewwa sewda), so called because in summer much of its plumage turns black or dark grey. It is a scarce species here but birdwatchers spot some every year. Another group of people familiar with black terns are fishfarm workers, because their place of work – for very obvious reasons – at- tracts the attention of terns and other fishing birds.
