maltatoday | SUNDAY • 24 NOVEMBER 2024 5 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 946. Painted Lady FOR all their myriad adaptations, insects don't survive cold very well, so it's no surprise that most disappear for our cooler months (not that any cold has actually set in yet); they die or hide under- ground, behind bark, etc. Same goes for butterflies, which don't sur- vive winters but "live on" in the eggs they lay. Now that days are getting shorter, the painted lady (M. farfett tax-xewk) female looks for suitable plants where to deposit her future generation. Butter- flies are careful where they lay, as their caterpillars are finicky about what they eat. As its Maltese name indicates, the painted lady goes for thistle plants (also borage and mallows). The young hatch and eat their fill until they are ready to pupate. A period of suspended animation ensues, then they emerge for a few frantic days of mating and nectar binge-drinking. A GOOD WEEK Good Week/Bad Week A BAD WEEK Scotland's film and television industry is small and tightknit, so the BAFTA Scotland awards always feels a bit like a family wedding. Everyone knows each other, and everyone is dressed up to the nines. Family, friends and former bandmates have remembered Liam Payne at the One Direction star's funeral, just over a month after he died at the age of 31. The private service took place on Wednesday in Amersham in Buckinghamshire, north-west of London. No bride or groom, but all eyes will be on two first-time nominees Ahsley Storrie and Richard Gadd at tonight's ceremony. Payne's former bandmates Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik were amoung the mourners.
