3 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 27 JUNE 2025 NEWS GozoToday is a weekly newspaper focused primarily on Gozo. It hopes to serve as a source of information on business, culture, entertainment and of course current affairs. Gozo has a special charm about it but it is also a bustling Island with an identity of its own. GozoToday is published every Friday and is available to numerous outlets in Gozo and on the ferries that carry so many visitors to Gozo from Malta and beyond. GozoToday MediaToday Co. Ltd, Vjal ir-Rihan San Gwann SGN 9016 ASSISTANT EDITOR: LAURA CALLEJA Tel: (356) 21 382741-3, 21 382745-6 Website: www.maltatoday.com.mt E-mail: dailynews@mediatoday.com.mt THE Ministry for Gozo has launched the "Summer in Gozo" programme, featuring more than 130 cultural events scheduled across the island from July to September. Announced by Minister Clint Camill- eri, the programme includes artistic performances, cultural activities, and themed festivals. Events will be held over a 13-week period and are coordi- nated by the Directorate for Cultural Heritage within the ministry. Camilleri highlighted the programme as part of a broader strategy to promote quality tourism in Gozo, especially during the shoulder months. He cited recent data from the National Statis- tics Office, noting that Gozo surpassed 50,000 bed nights during the first quar- ter of 2025 — a record figure for the period. Camilleri said that unforeseen chal- lenges in previous years had prompted the ministry to invest more in cultur- al tourism that both respects the environment and supports local communities. "We're seeing results," Camilleri said, "and we are offer- ing added value to vis- itors through this rich and diverse cultural pro- gramme." The full event calendar is available at eventsingozo. com and on the Events in Gozo mobile app. Gozo launches 'Summer in Gozo' with over 130 cultural events Left: Minister Clint Camilleri (photo: MGP) CONTINUE FROM PAGE 1 Borg is running against lawyer Adrian De- lia, who led the Nationalist Party from 2017 to 2020. His time as leader was turbulent at best. He faced issues internally within the party, that ended in a no-confidence motion pushed by a group of MPs who called themselves the 'Blue he- roes'. Delia had originally won the leadership election in 2017 in a run-off with Chris Said, however was the. ousted as leader in 2020 in an election that saw him lose to Bernard Grech. This is the third time that Delia will contest the PN leadership. If he wins, it would be his second tenure as leader of the Nationalist Party. Since being ousted Delia, has managed to make inroads with the par- ty, earning support largely due to his role in exposing corruption in the Vitals case. Who is Alex Borg? Alex Borg, 29, was born in Victoria, Gozo. He comes from a politically active family: his father, Tony Borg, served as chief of staff to former Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono. He studied law at the University of Mal- ta and became a practicing lawyer in 2019. He enteredthe political fray in 2020 when he was elected to the executive committee of the Moviment Żgħażagħ Partit Nazzjon- alista (MZPN), where he served as Gozo Coordinator. In July 2021, he joined the Nationalist Party's Executive Committee. In the 2022 general election, Borg ran in the 13th District and received 6,108 first preference votes, the highest among all PN candidates after party leader Bernard Grech. He became a Member of Parliament in March 2022 and was appointed shadow minister for Gozo in April of that year. Borg's name has come up several times in leadership discussions. In April 2022, a MaltaToday survey listed him as a potential contender. Though he denied any interest at the time, he didn't rule out running in the future. In February 2024, Illum featured Borg on its front page as a possible future leader of the PN, ahead of the European Parliament elections. What has Borg said about the leadership campaign? Borg has said that the leadership race be- tween him and Adrian Delia will remain re- spectful. "What's certain is that this is a new chapter for the PN, no matter who wins," he said. Addressing rumours of a pact between him and Delia, Borg responded by saying that "the Labour Party is known for pacts, while the PN believes in offering a choice." He described the contest as a "race between friends". He was also asked about Facebook posts from Delia supporters calling him a back- stabber. Borg brushed off the comments and said he's committed to running a positive campaign. He stressed that the PN must come out of the leadership race stronger and more united. When questioned about his age, Borg replied, "Age is just a number," and ar- gued that his leadership would bring much-needed generational change. He said that if the PN listens to both its young and experienced voices, it can become a real al- ternative to the current government. Asked about the possibility of Franco Debono joining the leadership race, Borg called him a friend and said Debono's place should be within the PN. He expressed openness to finding a role for Debono with- in the party's future. "The PN is in Opposition. We cannot afford to exclude anyone. We should wel- come everyone, whether they're disap- pointed PN or PL supporters. We want to build a strong movement that can seriously challenge the PL government," he said.
