In separate interviews with MaltaToday, the two candidates for party leader were asked about their position on issues ranging from the gov- ernment's euthanasia proposal and Malta's ODZ boundaries. On euthanasia, Borg re- mained tight-lipped on his own voting prefer- ence, saying he "doesn't want to influence a n y o n e " . H o w e v - er, he made it clear that he would grant a free vote to the Nationalist MPs on the issues if he is entrusted as party leader. Meanwhile, Adrian Delia said plain and straight that he would not vote in favour of the government's eutha- nasia proposal if tabled in par- liament. In May, the gov- e r n m e n t published a blue- print for a regulatory f r a m e w o r k that would le- galise euthanasia under strict conditions. Under the proposed frame- work, the pro- cedure will only be available to mentally com- petent adults suffering from a ter- minal illness expected to lead to death with- in six months. Anyone with disabilities, men- tal health conditions, age-related illness such as dementia or experi- encing social isolation will not be able to under- go euthanasia.
