Nature Notebook Valletta & Floriana Community Assembly Friends of the Earth Malta is holding a community assembly on Saturday, 6th September at the Mall Garden, Floriana, 10 AM, for the residents of Valletta, Floriana and nearby communities. This assembly aims to voice the concerns of the residents in these localities. These assemblies aim to bring together local residents – in this case from Valletta, Floriana and nearby areas – through public meetings where people can share their experiences and concerns about the locality, par- ticularly in relation to the coastline and the sea. We're organising several such assemblies across the Maltese Islands and have already held one on Manoel Island. Voice your opinion and help us fight for a better local environment! To- gether we can bring change! Supported by The Minor Foundation for Major Challenge. Araar TREES can be broadly divided into two groups: flowering trees and conifers, with these last far outnumbered by the flower-bearers, spe- cies wise. In Malta we only have 2 or 3 native conifers (if that), and 30 years ago one of these was virtually unknown to the general pub- lic. But that all changed when the Environment Secretariat of those days declared it our national tree. Yes, it's the lovely, scaly-leaved, evergreen araar (M. għargħar). It became a star almost overnight! Suddenly everyone wanted to plant araar in their garden, school or afforestation project – there are over 500 planted at Foresta 2000 alone. And this was a good thing because the tree was seriously rare in Malta, with very few growing wild. The future looks rosier for the araar today. 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 31 AUGUST 2025 ALMANAC Victor Falzon
