In a statement issued earlier this week, the Chamber said the disruptions have led to severe delays, cancellations, and long queues, affecting Gozitan resi- dents and commuters. Reports have indicated that long lines of vehicles waiting for ferries have become common throughout the day, with the situation wors- ening over the weekend. "While the Chamber believes that the rights of workers should be safeguarded, it is urgent that the current situation is ad- dressed. The delays, cancella- tions, and long queues experi- enced in recent days are having a serious impact on all Gozitans and on everyone who depends on the company's services," the statement read. The Chamber also emphasized that the Gozo ferry is an essen- tial service on which many res- idents rely for work, education, and access to services not avail- able on the island. "The Chamber therefore calls on all parties concerned to come together and resolve the issues immediately," it added. Of this, €5 million will be used to restore properties in UCAs across the island. The Planning Authority has also contribut- ed €500,000 in national funds to ensure wider access to the scheme. Minister Camilleri said the in- vestment mirrors the success- ful transformation of Valletta through European funds and that Gozo is now set to benefit from similar support. He noted that this initiative aligns with Gozo's bid to be named Euro- pean Capital of Culture in 2031. "This scheme encourages the restoration and preservation of historic buildings while pro- moting Gozo's cultural and ar- chitectural identity. It gives new life to traditional urban areas and places Gozo at the forefront of our government's vision," Camilleri said. Minister Zrinzo Azzopardi said the project demonstrates how European and national funds are being used to deliver tangible results for local com- munities. He explained that the initiative forms part of the Sus- tainable Urban Development Strategy for 2021 to 2027, which focuses on Gozo through pro- jects related to built heritage, social inclusion, mobility and environmental sustainability. "Through this scheme, we are giving new life to our towns and villages by encouraging resi- dents to preserve the unique character of historic buildings while improving the quality of life in our communities. These funds are an investment in the dreams of our people and in Gozo's sustainable future," Zrinzo Azzopardi said. Properties located within UCAs are eligible for grants of up to €15,000, while Grade 1 and Grade 2 scheduled proper- ties can receive up to €25,000 to restore their façades. Minister Camilleri encour- aged residents who own prop- erties within Gozo's UCAs and wish to carry out restoration works to apply for the scheme. Applications can be submitted through a perit and, once ap- proved by the Planning Author- ity, restoration works can begin.
