8 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 14 NOVEMBER 2025 CULTURE THE historic bond between the La Stella Band Club of Victoria, Gozo and the King's Own Band Club of Valletta dates back to 1877, when the King's Own Band—then known as La Vincitrice Nazion- ale—participated for the first time in the feast of St George Martyr in Victoria, following an invitation from the St George Parish. From that moment onward, the King's Own became synonymous with the St George's Feast. When the La Stella Philharmonic Society officially assumed responsibili- ty for the external festivities of St George, it began inviting the King's Own Philharmonic every year to contribute its distinctive musical presence. Over the decades, this collabo- ration nurtured a historic friend- ship between the two bands—the "tal-istilla" of Malta's and Gozo's capital cities. This bond was fur- ther strengthened in 2018, when Dr John Galea was appointed Mu- sic Director of the La Stella Band, having already directed the King's Own Band since 2003. As part of the celebration mark- ing more than 145 years of this en- during friendship, the two bands will unite for an exceptional con- cert under the direction of Mro Dr John Galea.
