Salina nature reserve AS the heat very slowly dissipates and hopefully gives way to a prop- er autumn, birds already indicate the time of year. And no better place to appreciate this than at Salina nature reserve, where gulls are already gathering as if for a massive rock festival later on in the season. Since taking over management of the site, BirdLife's main goal for Salina was to turn the saltpans into a wetland magnet for birds and other wildlife, while still devoting a few pans for salt har- vesting, as originally intended. Further habitat restoration in and around the site are giving encouraging results, as nesting moorhens, little ringed plovers and reed-warblers (and an ERA award) attest. Go visit some weekend, there's always a few birdwatchers who'll be happy to help you spot and identify other birds among the gulls, such as egrets, kingfishers, grebes, sandpipers – and who knows, maybe a flamingo. 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 23 NOVEMBER 2025 ALMANAC Victor Falzon, Aron Tanti (photo)
