3 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 22 MARCH 2026 ART La Semana Santa de España in Mqabba Malta WHERE Spanish Passion Meets Maltese Devotion. A celebration of sacred artistry. The Santa Marija Mqabba Youth Section proudly presents the annual La Semana Santa de España exhibition, the only exhi- bition in Malta entirely dedicat- ed to the traditions of Spanish Holy Week. Held at Palazz Santa Marija sit- uated in Church Square, Mqab- ba, this unique cultural and de- votional exhibition features over 200 handcrafted miniature rep- licas of statues seen in Spanish Semana Santa processions, with particular focus on the Andalu- sia region, especially the cities of Seville and Málaga. Each miniature statue is dressed in velvet, embroidered with gold and silver thread, all handmade by local volunteers. The exhi- bition also includes photos, au- thentic medals from Spanish brotherhoods, vestments, and other memorabilia associated with Spain's renowned Holy Week celebrations. Supported by the Embassy of Spain in Malta, the Mqabba Local Council and the Western Regional Council, the exhibi- tion serves as a cultural bridge between Malta and Spain, two nations deeply rooted in Catho- lic heritage and artistic tradition. Beyond its artistic value, La Se- mana Santa de España in Mqab- ba is a locally led initiative that promotes cultural education, heritage preservation, and inter- national collaboration. Over the years, it has grown into a recog- nised Holy Week attraction, of- fering visitors an experience that combines tradition, craftsman- ship, and devotion.
