Greater snapdragon GROWING proud and erect on several bright green stalks and flaunting masses of eye-catching flowers of deep pink, the great- er snapdragon (M. papoċċi ħamra) is hard to miss at this time of year. Its beauty renders it easy to mistake for some rare creation that escaped a horticultural gargen. But then you notice it grow- ing from rubble walls, cracks in pavement, etc. and you realise it's "just" another wild flower. It is a common spring-flowering shrub that makes these strange slipper-shaped flowers with a special petal in the shape of a lip. Much to my childhood delight, that lip can be made to snap open and shut, a job the bulkier bees eagerly take on to get at the sweet nectar inside. Wait for the surprisingly skull-like seed cases to ripen, sprinkle a handful of its minuscule seeds and start your own flowerpot population! 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 22 MARCH 2026 ALMANAC Victor Falzon https://foemalta.org/event/plant-based-zero-waste-cooking-class/ The Secret Life of Nanna Genoveffa takes place at the Salesian Theatre in Sliema
