1. What's been the most defining moment in your career so far? One of the most defining moments in my career has been the opportunity to study with exceptional teachers and attend one of the most selective music schools in the United States. I was fortunate to graduate from the Curtis Institute of Music in 2022, an experience that profoundly shaped both my artistic identity and personal growth. During my training, I had the privilege of performing alongside outstanding international artists, learning from every collaboration. A major milestone was performing a leading role in The Barber of Seville in Philadelphia, followed by appearances with Opera Naples in Florida. I was also honoured to be selected as a quarterfinalist in Operalia 2023, where I had the opportunity to be heard by Plácido Domingo.I am profoundly grateful for the support I have received throughout my journey, particularly from the BOV Joseph Calleja Foundation, generous donors such as Carol Lids and Maria Manetti Shrem, and my late teacher Juliette Bisazza, who shaped my voice from the bottom of her heart. May she rest in peace. I am now proud to continue growing at the Masca- rade Opera in Florence. 2. As a creative, how do you navigate the world and speed of social media? As an opera singer, I approach social media with both awareness and intention. While our art form is grounded in depth, discipline, and the passage of time, social media operates at a rapid and often imme- diate pace. Navigating these two worlds requires balance. I consider social media a valuable platform to share my artistic journey, offering insight into rehearsals, performances, and the work behind the scenes. It allows me to connect with a broader audience and contribute to making opera more accessi- ble to new generations. At the same time, I remain mindful not to let the speed or demands of these platforms influence my artistic development. Growth in opera requires patience, reflection, and contin- uous study. 3. Do you consider artificial intelligence a threat to your career, or an opportunity? I view artificial intelligence as an oppor- tunity rather than a threat. I am deeply interested in the intersection of art and science, particularly in understanding the biology of the voice and how the body functions in true singing. A scientific approach allows me to refine technique with precision while maintaining artistic integrity. I am also drawn to other forms of creative exploration, such as cooking, which, like music, requires a combination of knowl- edge, discipline, and intuition to produce something expressive and personal. Nonetheless, I do not believe artificial intelligence can replicate the essence of opera. Our art is inherently human, rooted in emotion, presence, and the unique con- nection between performer and audience. Technology may enhance understanding or support learning, but the power, indi- viduality, and authenticity of the human voice remain irreplaceable. 4. How do you stay motivated and in- spired, especially during tough times or when the work feels hard? I stay motivated and inspired by main- taining a balance between discipline, reflection, and passion. Physical activity, such as going to the gym, helps me clear my mind and sustain the energy required for the demands of opera. Listening to music, particularly opera, reminds me of the beauty and depth of the art I have dedicated my life to. As a naturally perfectionist person, I am deeply committed to continuous learn- ing and growth. Challenges and difficult moments are opportunities to refine my technique, deepen my understanding, and strengthen my resilience. I also find inspiration and grounding in spending time with family and loved ones, as well as in moments of solitude and travel, which allow me to recharge and gain perspec- tive. Ultimately, my motivation comes from a combination of dedication, curiosity, human connection, and a genuine love for my art. 5. How do you balance your creative instincts with the expectations of your audience or collaborators? I balance my creative instincts with the expectations of my audience and collab- orators by approaching every project with professionalism, humility, and respect. I believe it is essential to listen to and learn from everyone involved—directors, conductors, colleagues, and audience members—valuing their perspectives and insights. I also prioritise inclusivity, honouring individuals' identities and pro- nouns, and fostering a collaborative and respectful environment. Even when opinions differ, I remain committed to maintaining harmony and working constructively as part of a team. Opera is inherently a collective art form, and I believe that true artistry emerges when personal expression is thoughtfully balanced with the goals of the ensemble. By combining my own artistic vision with attentiveness to the needs and expecta- tions of others, I strive to deliver perfor- mances that are both authentic and col- laborative, ensuring that every participant feels respected and valued. 6. How do you approach a new project? Do you have a specific process or routine you follow? I follow a very structured routine to prepare for each project. I create weekly schedules to organise my practice and track my progress. I am quite old-fash- ioned, so I like to write everything down in a notebook, which helps me stay organ- ised and reflect on my improvements. When preparing a role, I immerse myself deeply in the character and the text, study- ing the words and understanding the story behind them. I focus on learning the opera accurately in rhythm and phrasing and work closely with professional coaches to refine my pronunciation and technique. For me, the most important part is to tell a story with my interpretation. I aim to give a performance that is vocally and emotionally 100% honest, truthful, and well-prepared. I believe this approach is essential for anyone aspiring to have a successful international opera career. 7. Can you let us in on some of the future projects, works? I am deeply grateful for all that I have achieved since a very young age. On 30 May, I will have a special performance and am honoured to be invited by the New Generation Festival to collaborate once again at a prestigious theatre in Italy. Additionally, in my hometown of Gozo, I will perform on 4 July in Close To The Voice – Charles Buttigieg Live at the Grand Hotel ballroom. Tickets are available through ShowsHappening. I look forward to bringing my voice, artistic expression, and musical interpretation to the audience, sharing my passion for op- era with precision, emotion, and authen- ticity. These upcoming performances are an opportunity to connect with listeners and celebrate the beauty of this timeless art form. maltatoday | SUNDAY • 12 APRIL 2026 Music Ivan Grech releases video of new song Show Me How to Love You ARTS • TV • WHAT'S ON BY LAURA CALLEJA suggestions by email lcalleja@mediatoday.com.mt The Q & A CHARLES BUTTIGIEG 7 questions for... Extra round Are there specific composers you feel particularly connected to, and do you have a dream role to perform, and why? I am an evolving artist with a strong foundation in Italian-repertoire, com- plemented by experience in French and German opera which I have performed extensively. The works of Donizetti, Bellini, Verdi, and Mozart have been instrumental in developing my voice, preserving its beauty, align- ment, and expressive flexibility. Among my future aspirations, Rigo- letto and Scarpia in Tosca are my dream roles, representing both vocal and dramatic challenges that I aim to approach with careful preparation. I am particularly drawn to roles that combine character depth and dramat- ic intensity, including both bel canto and more expressive character parts. My objective is to cultivate a reper- toire grounded in tradition, guided by technical precision, interpretive depth, and a commitment to artistic growth. Charles Buttigieg, a Maltese baritone from Gozo, is celebrated for his rich vocal tone, compelling stage presence, and ascending international career. A recipient of support from the BOV Joseph Calleja Foundation, Buttigieg pursued advanced studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he graduated with honours. For the 2025/26 season, Buttigieg is an Affiliate Artist with Mascarade Opera and performs regularly across Europe.
