Bugeja Said was speaking to MaltaToday during the launch of the initiative in Ħal Għaxaq following a press conference. Last October, the introduction of Fish Fridays caught the atten- tion of many as Finance Minis- ter Clyde Caruana read out his budget speech. The programme is intended to encourage children to eat more fish by giving them the chance to taste a variety of locally availa- ble species prepared in different ways. On Tuesday, it was explained that the format of Fish Fridays is modelled on similar initiatives, such as programmes which gave out milk, fruit and vegetables to children in schools. Fish Fridays will see nutrition- ists and chefs visiting different schools in Malta and Gozo to explain the importance of fish to a healthy and balanced diet. This will first be done through a pilot project set to kick off on 24 April. The initiative was also de- scribed as a great benefit to fish- ers, whose catches will be given greater exposure to future gen- erations. Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja noted that only around 6% of children in Malta eat fish, while voicing concern about child obesity rates. Bugeja Said told this newspa- per that some children are raised in households where fish isn't a common meal. She said that the initiative will expose children to the benefits and taste of fish, encouraging them to choose fish-based meals outside of school. The social partners are set to convene a meeting of the Malta Council for Economic and So- cial Development (MCESD). On Tuesday, government re- leased a statement detailing a meeting between the prime minister and representatives from the energy sector. Prime Minister Robert Abe- la stated that government will continue protecting families and businesses through poli- cies that ensure energy security and economic stability. He noted that this is possible because the country has main- tained strong public finances, which now allow government to continue offering guarantees of stable energy prices and cer- tainty of supply. Meanwhile, Energy Minister Miriam Dalli explained that the stability in Malta's ener- gy sector stems from hedging agreements with international banks, and storage plans. "This means that while Mal- tese consumers are currently paying €1.34 per litre of petrol and €1.21 per litre of diesel, the average in the Eurozone is sig- nificantly higher: €1.95 per li- tre of petrol and €2.16 per litre of diesel." She also noted that Malta is the only European country that uses a hedging system for vehicle fuels, while Enemalta adopts a hedging system and ensures storage," Minister Dal- li reiterated. Present at the meeting were Enemalta Executive Chairman Ing. Ryan Fava, Interconnect Malta CEO Ing. Ismail D'Am- ato, IESC Executive Chair- man Ing. Johann Zammit, and Enemed Executive Chairman Kevin Chircop. The MCESD will be briefed on Malta's plan to cushion the blows of the shocks in the international energy sector
