Greater flamingo THE greater flamingo (M. fjamingu) is one of the most striking birds we see in Malta: large, with an impossibly long neck, bubbleg- um pink legs and beak (in adults) and a spectacular black-red wing plumage that would catch the eye of even the least nature-inclined among us. The flamingo's odd beak seems almost a deformity but when you watch the bird sifting small crustaceans from the shallow lakes where these birds live, you quickly realise that beak is actual- ly another marvel of evolution. Flamingoes are gregarious animals, living, nesting and travelling in groups. We have nowhere in Malta large enough for flamingoes to form a nesting colony but nearby Sicily and Tunisia do. Thanks to this we can enjoy regular annual sightings of flocks flying past on migration, with one or two even resting at BirdLife wetlands like Għadira, Is-Simar and Salina (there was one there this week). How tragic that several thousand local men still think the only good flamingo is a dead flamingo. 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 26 APRIL 2026 ALMANAC Victor Falzon, Aron Tanti (photo) Register Here: https://foemalta.org/event/navigate-climate-emo- tions-on-earth-day/ Somedays Festival will take place from 30 April to 3 May
