NOEL MUSCAT INPOĠĠU LIN-NIES L-EWWEL 24 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 24 MAY 2026 NEWS Labour Party now has more lawyers LAWYERS are now even more dominant within the Labour Party than they were in the 2022 election, an exercise undertaken by MaltaToday shows. The proportion of Labour can- didates from the legal profession now surpasses that of the Nation- alist Party, traditionally known for attracting more lawyers. A breakdown of candidates by profession shows that 36.1% of PL candidates are lawyers, compared to 33.8% in the PN. This suggests that the dominance of the legal profession has increased since 2022, when lawyers accounted for 16.4% of PL candidates and 21.3% of PN candidates. In contrast, the legal profession is completely absent in the AD- PD and Momentum lists, which are dominated by educators, ac- ademics, and other professional fields. The PL's lawyers include Prime Minister Robert Abela, the first Labour leader since Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici, a trade union lawyer, to hail from the legal pro- fession. Historically, only two of the party's six leaders were law- yers. In contrast, all seven PN leaders, including Alex Borg, hailed from the legal profession.
