9 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 19 AUGUST 2026 CULTURE Summer carnival returns to Bugibba and Marsaskala with 15 floats THE summer carnival will be returning between 21 and 23 August, bringing three evenings of colour, dance, music and car- nival art to Buġibba and Marsas- kala. This year's edition is or- ganised by Festivals Malta in collaboration with the Local Council of St Paul's Bay and Marsaskala. Activities begin in Buġibba on 21 August, with the parade starting at 7pm from Dawret il-Gzejjer and continuing along the Promenade to the National Aquarium of Malta. The fol- lowing night, 22 August, the parade continued from the Aquarium at 7pm along the Promenade to Triq il-Ħalel. In Marsaskala, on Sunday 23 August, a modified route will be used so that the Carnival reaches more parts of the local- ity. The parade starts from the Żonqor car park, near the pool, passes through Triq iż-Żonqor towards Ċimenta, under the Parish Church, and continues along Triq ix-Xatt. The public will be able to en- joy 15 carnival floats, adapted specifically for the summer pa- rades, together with a number of dance companies. Through this initiative, the creativity and craftsmanship behind carnival are given an- other platform throughout the year, while the work of art- ists, float builders and dancers reaches new audiences. Minister for Arts, Culture and National Heritage Malcolm Paul Agius Galea said the car- nival is part of Malta's cultural identity and the result of the talent and dedication of hun- dreds of people. He added that the govern- ment will continue investing in these traditions, not only to preserve them but also to give them room to grow, evolve, and reach more people, noting that the summer carnival brings culture directly into communi- ties and makes it more acces- sible to families, residents, and visitors. Festivals Malta Chief Execu- tive Frans Agius said the sum- mer carnival widens access to the tradition and brings it di- rectly into communities. Malta Carnival Artistic Director Ja- son Busuttil said the 15 floats and dance companies will once again fill the streets with the colour and energy that are syn- onymous with the Maltese car- nival.
