THE Maltese Islands are ex- pected to experience a three-day heatwave from Friday to Sun- day, with temperatures forecast to climb as high as 39°C, a Malta Met Office spokesperson told GozoToday. The maximum temperature is expected to remain between 36°C and 39°C from Thursday 27 August until Sunday 30 Au- gust, with an Orange Weather Warning currently in force due to the high temperatures. The Met Office spokesperson said that, given the mean max- imum temperature for August is 32°C, the conditions expect- ed from Friday 28 August until Sunday 30 August are expected to constitute a three-day heat- wave. The intense heat follows a par- ticularly hot day on Wednesday, when the maximum tempera- ture recorded at Luqa Airport reached 41.2°C. This was the highest temperature recorded so far this month. Temperatures are expected to ease somewhat at the beginning of next week, although they will remain above the climatic norm. From Monday 31 August until at least Wednesday 2 Septem- ber, maximum temperatures are forecast to range between 33°C and 35°C. As temperatures begin to fall, the current Orange Weather Warning is likely to be down- graded to Yellow at the begin- ning of next week, the spokes- person said. The latest spell of extreme heat comes just weeks after Malta recorded its high- est July temperature on record, when temperatures reached 43.3°C on 18 July. The highest August tempera- ture ever recorded in Malta was 43.8°C on 9 August 1999. Meanwhile, the lowest August minimum temperature on re- cord is 15.9°C, recorded on 27 August 1972.
