Luke Farrugia: 'It's not about race, it's about what's right or wrong' 6 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 20 SEPTEMBER 2026 INTERVIEW MARSA Mayor Luke Farru- gia insists that the problems facing the locality and his fight to address them are not a matter of race, but of right and wrong. Farrugia's comments made his comments within the con- text of sometimes racist com- ments under posts he pub- lishes when speaking about social and environmental problems in Marsa. On the topic of his social media posts, Farrugia ex- plained that he doesn't want to give the impression that Marsa is a locality particular- ly riddled with problems, but noted that raising awareness on social media is the most effective way those problems can be solved. Speaking specifically on the locality's illegal waste dispos- al problem, he stated that the problem stems from the fact that many people still don't understand the importance of proper waste disposal. Farru- gia admitted that when faced with such cases, he feels re- sponsible to lay down the law. Another approach Farrugia identified as being crucial to mayors' work is their coop- eration with national entities and NGOs. He described the job as one where he constant- ly needs to keep government entities informed of the go- ings-on of his locality, adding that without their help, there is little local councils can do. Marsa is one of those localities with a very particular set of realities. Its mayor, Luke Farrugia tells Matthew Farrugia that the key to staying on top of everything is to keep the public informed of the good and the bad behaviours impacting the locality
