Nature Notebook OUR Save Our Shores exhibition travelled to Marsaskala, to show- case our campaign focused on protecting our coast and sea. Dur- ing the exhibition, we had the opportunity to speak with people passing by and share the concerns and proposed demands behind the campaign. Save Our Shores highlights the environmental, social and health impacts of Malta's maritime industries, while calling for public access to our coast and sea, protection from pollution, and the restoration of coastal ecosystems. The campaign brings together the concerns and ideas of coastal communities and calls for policies that put public wellbeing and our shared environment before private interests. Carob YOU'LL be hard-pressed to find a tree more quintessentially a part of the Maltese countryside than the carob (M. ħarruba). Yet it's ac- tually native to the East Med and the Middle East, so the species was introduced, certainly in antiquity, possibly in Roman times. It was imported because its seed pods made excellent fodder for beasts of burden, not to mention the thick syrupy ġulepp so gentle on a sore throat. Other benefits of this tree are the rich compost that forms underneath its dark canopy, a godsend for our impoverished soils; ideal resting, roosting, hiding, sheltering and nesting spots for birds and other animals; and flowers that attract bees in droves. The tree's ability to thrive in dry conditions is a big plus too. In short, a tree that demands little but gives much in return.
