The pair played out a ding-dong first set, which Cornet took on a tie-break, before last year's runner-up hit back to claim victory 6-7 (2/7) 6-3 6-2 in a little under two hours and 40 minutes. Azarenka fought off break points before breaking Cornet to go 4-2 up in the second set, after that provided the shift in momentum needed for her to go on and battle through. "In the first set, Alize played really well and I made too many mistakes," Azarenka said. "I wasn't patient enough. I had a lot of chances and I didn't convert them. "The difference in the second and third sets was I played a bit more aggressive and when I got my chances I did convert them." Azarenka, the two-time Australian Open winner, will now face Ana Ivanovic for a place in the quarter-finals after the Serb also fought back from a set down. Ivanovic was heading out of the tournament when American Christina McHale served at 5-4 and a set up, but the 13th seed broke serve before claiming the set herself. From there, the 2008 French Open champion broke again late in the deciding set to seal a 4-6 7-5 6-4 victory in two hours, 26 minutes.
