The Tuskeegee Airmen is the true story of how a group of African American pilots overcame racist opposition to become one of the finest U.S. fighter groups in World War II. During the World War II, the U.S. Army Air Corps initiated a special project to integrate African American pilots into the Fighter Pilot Program. Known as the Tuskeegee Airman, for the name of the airbase at which they were trained, these men were forced to constantly endure harassment, prejudice, and much behind the scenes politics until at last they were able to prove themselves in combat. On 29 March 2007, the Tuskegee Airmen were collectively awarded a Congressional Gold Medal at a ceremony in the U.S. Capitol rotunda. The medal is currently on display at the Smithsonian Institution.
