Eating well doesn't have to be such a chore as more and more people are taking to healthy lifest yles. As people become more health conscious – yes, even in Malta, though it is taking us longer to get there than our European counterparts – dining out often means straying from your healthy regime to indulge in creamy, but- tery afternoons, fuelled by wine and adding inches to your waist- line. However this need not be the case. Some restaurants are start- ing to think of the health con- scious and including meals that don't necessarily mean straying from your weekday routine. The Rocca di Montemassi Estate is situated in the Monteregio zone, a long-standing wineproducing district that gained D.O.C. status relatively recently. The zone itself constitutes a highly distinctive terroir between the shoreline and the local hills boasting rich metal deposits. The soil, which is predominantly clay-based and is almost devoid of silt, is perfect for allowing the vines to gain access to all their nutrients, while retaining rainwater in the spring during very dry spells. Sun rays bathe the area from Montalcino to Bolgheri (by the sea), providing the vines and grapes with ideal light. The pedo-climatic conditions are therefore perfect for obtaining exciting wines. Maremma un- doubtedly represents the new frontier for Italian wines because it enjoys extraordinary quality potential that is virtually unexplored. The grapes (50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Syrah, 15% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot) are handpicked, select- ing only those that are perfectly ripe. The Merlot and Syrah varietals are harvested between the 10th and 15th of September. Followed by Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon in early October. Each varietal is vinified separately in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures for 30 days. After separating the juice from the must, the malolactic fermentation immediately follows. Aging lasts for 12 months. Imported exclusively by Charles Grech & Co. Ltd, Valley Road, B'Kara.
