Events 42 maltatoday, Sunday, 9 March 2014 The Alfred Mizzi Foundation recognises the crucial role of family caregiving of mentally ill persons Cisk organises a sketch-up in a brewery Joseph Zammit Tabona appointed as director on the Medserv Plc board Since 2008, The Alfred Mizzi Foun- dation has been providing an annual grant to the St Jeanne Antide Foun- dation, an NGO that is committed to supporting people experiencing pov- erty and those whose life challenges lead them to slide into poverty. One of the categories of vulnerable per- sons in Malta whom The Alfred Mizzi Foundation is enabling this NGO to serve is family caregivers of persons suffering from a chronic mental illness. The plight of these courageous relatives who regularly care for a mentally ill family member is a hidden and lonely one, triggering untold family stressors. The Alfred Mizzi Foundation rec- ognises the fact that family caregiv- ers of mentally ill persons too have a right to access professional support so that they can continue to shoulder their overwhelming primary care giving responsibility without break- ing down themselves. Thus, it want- ed to be at the forefront of funding a unique service that reaches a hidden vulnerable group in Maltese society. Through a partial grant of €6,000 in 2013 and through other fund- raising efforts, the St Jeanne Antide Foundation was able to provide pro- fessional support to 222 individuals from 150 families through its Lwien Service. Of these 222 individuals supported, 112 were primary car- egivers. Of these 112 caregivers, 59 accessed the Lwien service on their own, whereas the rest consulted the professional team with their ill fam- ily member. Of the 150 families sup- ported through the Lwien Service, 53 additionally accessed the Foun- dation's Social Work, Counselling and Emotional Freedom Service. 12 took part in the Depression Support Group. The grant from The Alfred Mizzi Foundation enabled the St Jeanne Antide Foundation to support 24 families from Żabbar, 13 from Pao- la, 11 from Fgura, 10 from Tarxien and 92 from other localities around Malta. Around a dozen British cartoonists flocked to the Farsons brewery last month to spend a day sketching car- toons about Cisk. The Cartoonists' Club of Great Britain, which is one of the UK's old- est cartoonist clubs, got the oppor- tunity to see how Malta's favourite beer is brewed. Sporting their specially designed t-shirts, where the froth from a Cisk can burst into a Maltese cross, the cartoonists came armed with pens, paintbrushes and sketchbooks. After the tour of the brewery, the cartoonists turned the Farsons visi- tors' centre into a studio and began drawing cartoons featuring Cisk. Cisk awarded a joint first prize to the best cartoonist of the day: Rich- ard Skipworth who drew a cartoon version of Leonardo DaVinci's Vit- ruvian Man holding four cans of Cisk, and Noel Ford's cartoon Cisk Assessment. This was the group's third visit to Malta for their annual Mighty Mal- ta Minicon, held between February 15-22. The Cartoonists' Club of Great Britain was set up over 50 years ago and today still stands to provide a social base for around 200 cartoon- ists who share tips, hold competi- tions, and travel together. Cartoonist Richard Skipworth also created an animation about Cisk that can be viewed on: http://www. richskipworth.co.uk/cisk.html.
