From the kick off by Overseas they pinned Kavalieri in their own half for a long period, stretching them from side to side by wide passing and fast running. As always the Kavallieri defence was spirited and effective but in- evitably the first try came through a change in direction and a drive by number 8 Rulli. The same pat- tern was repeated and although Kavallieri were trying to launch attacks they were unable to break through, despite their brave at- tempts. On the contrary Overseas attacks were well run, with swift passing, off loading and support. Again they swept out to the right and the promising Schembri broke through to score. At last Kavallieri raised their game and managed to kick into the Overseas half and laid siege to the Overseas line for a long period, against spirited defence. Blyton was close to scoring on the blind side but was bundled out, but finally Cutajar managed to score and bring them back into the game; This triggered more fine passing , stretching and running by Over- seas and after a lot of support work and passing which tires defences, Schembri scored his second try. Another attacking phase by Over- seas, quick ball along the line and when the move was stopped Stiva- la was there to take the final pass and swerve over to score, convert- ed by Briffa to give Overseas a half time lead of 22 – 5. A passionate pep talk by Kaval- lieri captain Bonavia made them determined to make a real effort, and they launched themselves into Overseas territory from the kick off. After a fumbled kick an Overseas infringement gave away a penalt y, quickly taken by Dou- blesin despite being obstructed by Nahon, who deserved a yel- low card. Doublesin ducked and twisted his way to score, Blyton converting. Kavallieri clearly de- cided to play their close ruck maul and drive game and although this is effective it only gains a few me- tres at a time and is hard physi- cal work. Although they have the marvelous spirit they do not seem to have the running stamina and these attacks inevitably grind to a halt. Nevertheless although Over- seas spent long passages in Kaval- lieri territory they could not score against a blanket defence. Kawara made a difference when he came on as a sub but he also earned a yellow card which denied his team of a man and this really drained them of energy at a crucial mo- ment. This made for a much more boring game to watch. Inevitably they tired and the Overseas added two late tries by Rulli and Borg. Several of the Overseas players have improved enormously since joining from the defunct Alliga- tors, especially Briffa, who is now much fitter. Other players are showing great promise such as Schembri and Borg for Overseas and Zammit for Kavallieri. Kaval- lieri probably need more stamina traing if they are to continue their challenge.
