Saturday 5th April. Kick Off 2pm. Hibs Stadium, Kordin MIKE TURNER MALTA National Rugby Squad have a major task ahead in the coming two weeks. Next Saturday at Hibs Stadium, Kordin, they play the Divi- sion 2A leaders who rank 31st in the world table as opposed to Malta at 43rd. Netherlands are already sure of promotion but Malta could still face play-offs to retain 2A status of they fail to pick up a bonus point in the next two matches against the top two teams. Netherlands are a strong physi- cal side who have beaten the much smaller Malta men soundly at every previous encounter so they present a major challenge. Nevertheless if Malta can turn on the sparkling form they found against Croatia they could cause a major shock in front of the marvelous home crowd with the "Malta Roar". The spirit is high in the youngest ever national squad, average age circa 23, and where they might lack weight and brawn, they have some very tricky and speedy runners and plenty of rugby brain. The match will certainly be spec- tacular if both teams manage to find form on the day and National Coach, Damian Neill is spoiled for choice at some key positions, such as f ly half. Hopefully there will be no injury problems after the train- ing camp in England this week. It is interesting and encouraging news that Rhodri Apsi, who was with the Welsh Under 20 squad and has a du- al qualification, has chosen to play for Malta. Further interest will to see whether a 7th grandson of Doris Buttigieg of Floriana will a gain a cap for Malta in the next two weeks. We should research whether this is a world record – seven national rugby players from one family. The Hollo- way brothers are back in the squad after injury, grandsons of Professor Fenech, and there are always other family reunions at the home inter- nationals. The following week there will be another big test against the very am- bitious and professional Swiss, who are currently second in the Division. In Malta they were allowed to gain the psychological advantage and the Maltese men should not really have lost against a dour but well organ- ized opponent. Again, if Malta can use their sparkling , running rugby to good effect they could shock the Swiss at home and come back win- ners. A lot will depend on how the front row deal with the players from the French Leagues who are always hard opponents to stand up to, last encounter was won by the Swiss, and so much depends on the stabil- ity of a team's front row. Malta need to get it right in their heads and they can beat the Swiss. If Malta beat both sides they have a possible opportunity for promotion play-offs, so this is a big two weeks for the Malta notional rugby men and Mr. Neill. Forza MALTA, sup- port the men of Malta, led by South End Core – give them the famous Malta Roar on that great rugby pitch at Hibs. YOUR FIRST CLICK OF THE DAY www.maltatoday.com.mt
