maltatoday, SUNDAY, 6 APRIL 2014 THIS WEEK 30 MUSIC & NIGHTLIFE APRIL 10-12 Aural Pleasures Concert of bawdy music from Broadway and West End musicals at St James Cavalier, Valletta at 20:00. Organised by the Wembley Store Boys. Featuring: Justin Mamo, Steffi Thake, Joseph Zammit, Tezara Camillieri, emceed by James Ryder, with a special guest appearance by Katherine Brown, and accompanied on the piano by Angele Galea. Directed by Joseph Zammit. APRIL 11-13 Rock the South Third edition of the music festival taking place at Zion Reggae Bar, Marsaskala, starting at 18:00 on April 11 and 12; 14:00 on April 13. Featuring a variety of musical genres, from rock, punk and indie to hip hop, pop, folk, acoustic singer- songwriters, ska and Dub. Apart from the bands, the event will also feature a 'Battle of the MCs'. In addition, two bands – Dripht and Troffa Ħamra y Los Mechones – will be officially launching their new CDs. Under the direction of Maria Zahra, the concert will feature a string quartet formed by Reggie Clews and Rosanne Dimech on the violin, Savio Debono on the viola and Gilmour Peplow on the violoncello will be performing Haydn's 'Seven last words' in preparation for Holy Week. APRIL 19 Dance Rabbit Dance Alternative rock/indie pop party at The Black Pearl, Ta' Xbiex Marina at 22:30. Featuring DJs Bob, G is for Gustav and Jamie DC. Entrance is at €5 at the door. APRIL 26 Plato's Dream Machine: Ghera The folk-pop band will be launching their debut album, 'Ghera' at the MITP Theatre, St Christopher's Street, Valletta. The band will be collaborating with local poet Adrian Grima. Tickets are at €7, €10 including album. The event and album production are being supported by the Malta Arts Fund. THEATRE & DANCE APRIL 11-13 Post Dramatic Stress Disorder Satirical comedy about the actor's life written, directed and featuring Marta Vella at the MADC Clubrooms, Sta Venera at 19:30. APRIL 11-13 Jesus Christ Superstar Performance of the popular musical at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta, presented by members of the Brno City Theatre, Czech Republic. APRIL 11-13 Cittadin Vassalli Stagun Teatru Malti ('Jiena Nhobb, Inti Thobb') at the Manoel Theatre, Valletta, 20:00. Adapted by Tyrone Grima and directed by Mario Philip Azzopardi, it deals with the life of Mikiel Anton Vassalli. Through the life and works of the celebrated Maltese philosopher and linguist, comes this contemporary work on the Maltese identity and the Maltese soul. Tickets are at €20 and €20. APRIL 17-22 The Complete History of Europe (More or Less) New edition of the comical trip through history by Malcolm Gale and Joseph Zammit – of the 'More or Less Theatre' team – taking place at St James Cavalier, Valletta, starting at 18:30. APRIL 16 bleedingfinelines First in a monthly series of poetry events at the new venue of Blackman's Studio, 280, Ritz Arcade, Republic Street, Valletta, starting at 19:30. EASTER EVENTS APRIL 15, 16 Il-Mixja Second edition of the Passion play organised by Mount Carmel Hospital Community Theatre and staged at grounds surrounding the Mount Carmel Hospital, Attard at 20:00. Featuring actors John Suda, Alan Fenech, Żep Camilleri, Moira Muscat, Michelle Zerafa, Anthony Ellul, Dominic Said, Triccas, Renato Dimech, Ivan Debattista, Sarah Camilleri, Neville Refalo, Simone Debattista, Silvio Axisa, Aaron Fenech, Marco Grech, Andy Catania, Gabriella Borg and the young Geordie Schembri (from Ċaqqufa). APRIL 16-20 Sejf Jinfidlek Qalbek Holy Week exhibition held at Saint Mary Band Club, 22 Misraħ Frenċ Abela, Dingli. Featuring a collection of original displays artistically created from salts, seeds and grains, along with a set of Good Friday statues and the various emblems used during the Holy Week Street Pageant taking place across the streets of Dingli. UNTIL APRIL 20 La Semana Santa The Youth Section within the Society of St. Mary and King George V Band Club Mqabba during the Holy Week days will be holding the unique exhibition for the Maltese Islands; La Semana Santa de Espana in Mqabba for the 8th consecutive year. FIREWORKS FESTIVAL APRIL 25-30 Malta International Fireworks Festival Thirteenth edition of the Malta Fireworks Festival, taking place across Marsaxlokk, Bugibba and Valletta. On April 25, the event will take place in Marsaxlokk, focusing on the International Pyromusical Competition and featuring steyrFire (Austria), Brezac artifices (France), Pyrotex Fireworx (United Kingdom), St Joseph Fireworks Factory (Zebbug, Malta). On April 26 the National Fireworks Competition will take place in Bugibba, featuring Banda Sant'Andrija Fireworks Factory (Luqa), St George's Fireworks Factory (Qormi), Santa Marija Fireworks Factory (Mgarr) and Banda l-Unjoni St Andrew's Fireworks Factory Luqa, Malta. The event will close with a grand finale at the Valletta Grand Harbour on April 30, with a pyromusical show celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Malta's accession to the European Union. More information: http://www. maltafireworksfestival.com/ PUBLIC LECTURE APRIL 10 Science in the Kitchen Public lecture by Keith Abela, Chef Patron at Sammy's at the Music Room of St James Cavalier, Valletta at 19:30. Abela will be discussing the changes of structures of proteins found in fish, meat and eggs at different temperatures while explaining the elasticity of the protein. Organised by Malta Café Scientifique. WHAT'S ON Festa Frawli Annual strawberry festival at Mgarr village square from 10:00 to 17:00. A constant supply of freshly picked strawberries will be on sale throughout the day, ferried regularly to the square by the farmers themselves. A wide variety of desserts, snacks and beverages will be available in our open air kitchen, all made with fresh Imgarr strawberries. Professional chefs will also be preparing novelty strawberry based gourmet dishes such as ravioli and a non-alcoholic cocktail bar. Home made strawberry wine, jams, conserves and other typical products will also be on sale. Souvenirs, artworks and crafts will be exhibited by the craftsmen themselves. A second open air kitchen will be offering typical Maltese dishes. There will also be live entertainment throughout. Double Fo A 'double-bill' of plays by renowned Italian dramatist Dario Fo by Unifaun Theatre at Manoel Theatre, Valletta – featuring The Virtuous Burglar and Marcolfa. The plays will include an acclaimed cast featuring Edward Mercieca, Alan Paris, Mikhail Basmadjian, Philip Stilon, Renato Dimech, Coryse Borg, Charlotte Grech and Magda Van Kuilenburg. The arrival of Sir Alexander Ball in Safi For the occasion of Jum Ħal-Safi, the local council presents this re-enactment of the war between the Maltese population and the French Army next at 10:00 at Village Square in Safi.
