maltatoday, SUNDAY, 15 JUNE 2014 BOATING 36 SAILING in Croatia was at first almost off-limits. Then, when it first emerged as a sailing des- tination, it was very expensive. However, as it matured it has become competitive and one of the favourite haunts of roving cruising sailors from all over the world. Now it has come of age, with its Biograd Boat Show accepted as the 34th member of the In- ternational Federation of Boat Show Operators (IFBSO). At their 50th congress in Is- tanbul, the IFBSO unanimously accepted the Biograd Boat Show as their new member. The presentation by the Bi- ogread delegation exceeded all of the standards set by the IF- BSO, and general praise was given for the ability of the or- ganisers Ilirija d.d. of Biograd to organize a show that has had 15 straight years of growth, and has become the largest in-water boat show in Central Europe. They were also impressed with innovative items such as the 360-degree virtual tour of the show online (www.bbs.com. hr). The existing member shows are mostly organized in large cities such as London, Dussel- dorf, Miami, Sydney, Shanghai, etc. while the Biograd show takes place in a town of only 5000 inhabitants, which makes this achievement all the more impressive. IFBSO was started in 1964 to create a high standard of excel- lence for its members, and to provide a forum for mutual co- operation and advancement. Along with the IFBSO, the ICOMIA Congress (Interna- tional Council of Marine In- dustry Associations) also took place, allowing for all delegates to network and exchange infor- mation.
