For more information and a full programme, log on to: http://www. maltaartsfestival.org/. 14 JULY 2 Cellos Young Croatian cellists Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser, known as 2CELLOS will be performing at the Pjazza Teatru Rjal at 21:00. Entrance is at €25, concessions €20 15 JULY Kelma Kelma Collaboration between a virtual community on Facebook – Kelma Kelma – and the Big Band Brothers, an 18-piece big band. The project, which will take the form of a performance, will present a series of traditional Maltese prose, poetry and songs to expose and highlight aspects of traditional Maltese culture in a contemporary approach. Performed at Pjazza Teatru Rjal at 21:00. Entrance is at €15, concessions €10. JULY 16, 17 King Lear Globe Theatre performance of William Shakespeare's King Lear at Pjazza Teatru Rjal at 21:00. Featuring Joseph Marcell – aka Geoffrey from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air – in the title role. Entrance is at €15, concessions €10. JULY 19 Hide and Seek Dance production by Spanish choreographer Iván Pérez at Fort St Elmo at 21:00. Hide and Seek is a Korzo production in co-production with Nederlands Dans Theater and financially supported by The City of The Hague and Ministry of OCW. Entrance is at €15, concessions €10. MUSIC & NIGHTLIFE JULY 9 Music from Elsewhere Music festival held at St George's Bay, St Julian's from 17:00. Featuring Different Strings, bark bark disco, Jane Doe, Fastidju, Frenzy Mono, SKiMMeD, Sempliciment Tat-Triq and The Areola Treat. Organised by the Fondazzjonijiet Celebrazzjonijiet Nazzjonali. Entrance is free. JULY 11 Norm Rejection: The Radical Underground CD launch The hardcore metal band will be launching theire new album, The Radical Underground, at Zion Reggae Bar, M'Scala. They will be supported by Sempliciment Tat -Triq and RAGE Against Society. First band starts at 20:00. Entrance is at €10 including Radical Underground CD. JULY 11 Arsha Our presents Basic House Performance by Basic House (Opal Tapes' founder, Stephen Bishop) at Buskett Roadhouse from 21:00. Also featuring Brian James, Sonitus Eco, Moth of Ages, Xahx and Anti-. Described as 'a mainstay of England's North-East DIY scene', Basic House is a blend of hazy house, techno, esoteric, ambient and drone music. Bishop also wrote his thesis on the acoustic properties of the Hypogeum in Hal Saflieni. His set will, in fact, reference these same acoustic properties to present something a bit different to his other sets. Bishop will also give a talk/Q&A session about the acoustic properties of the Hypogeum and will also field questions about Opal Tapes. JULY 11 Abba Tribute Concert ABBA Tribute Concert in aid of Puttinu Cares Children's Cancer Support Group from 20:30 onwards, held at St George's Square, Nigret, Żurrieq. Performing live during the concert is the band ABBA Authentic from the UK and will be hosted by Pierre Cordina. Entrance will be free of charge and all donations will be going to Puttinu Cares. Entrance to this event will be from St Luke's Street, Immaculate Conception Street and Misraħ il-Karmelitani. There will be no entry from Main Street. JULY 12 From Grease to Black Eyed Peas Party at Gianpula, limits of Rabat featuring music from the 1960s to today. Featuring DJs Alex Grech and Pierre Cordina. DJ Alberto Palmieri from Rome will join the line-up with a set at Gianpula's Groove Garden. Tickets are at €6. More information: www.reflexmalta.com. JULY 17–19 Malta Jazz Festival 24th edition of the Malta Jazz Festival taking place at Ta' Liesse, Valletta Grand Harbour. Featuring will host some of the biggest names in jazz, including Tom Harrell Colors of a Dream and Brecker Brothers Band Reunion 'The Heavy Metal Bebop Tour'. Featuring both local and international performers. Other highlights will include Mehliana (featuring Brad Mehldau and Mark Guiliana), who mix jazz with electronica to create a trance- laden music while the French-born musician Laurent Coq combines Caribbean/Creole influences with modern jazz piano in his Laurent Coq Dialogue Trio. Also featuring Claudio Baglioni, Bryn Terfel and Leona Lewis. Joseph Calleja will be accompanied by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra under the guidance of Mro Paul Bateman. VISUAL ARTS CONTINUES BY APPOINTMENT Retrospective by Norbert Attard Retrospective exhibition by artist Norbert Attard at Gozo Contemporary, 11, Mongur Street, Gharb, Gozo. Art works spanning 40 years will be on display. These include Attard's early paintings, drawings and lino cuts from the formative years, limited edition prints (including the Walled Cities, Mihrab and Kimono series) and abstract paintings from the 1970s, 80s, 90s, and photographic prints and sculptures, from his most recent conceptual phase. FESTIVAL JULY 14 – AUGUST 2 The Malta Arts Festival Ninth edition of the annual festival of culture and the arts featuring local and international performers taking place around various venues in Valletta. There will be a video opera where film and reality mirror each other mysteriously, a circus which brings together poetry and humour and a film festival under the stars. Artists from Croatia, the UK, Spain, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, South Africa and Russia will join some of the best Maltese artists in a festival with 18 performances and a separate programme of workshops and master classes. Most of these events will be held in some of the island's most prestigious historical venues, such as the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Pjazza Teatru Rjal and the newly-restored Fort St Elmo, bringing a layer of history to the festival's already rich narrative.
