Rudolph Marmara For the Registrar of Civil Courts and Tribunals Alfa wedding hall gets enforcement order over illegal construction JAMES DEBONO THE Malta Environment and Planning Authority has issued an enforcement order against John Abela Ltd, owners of the Alfa Gar- dens wedding hall in Ta' Qali, in connection with planning breach- es. The authority has recently final- ised an investigation of the plan- ning breaches and an enforcement order has been formalised. The order has been issued against the construction of various rooms and structures including contain- ers, paving and formation of pas- sageways and landscaping works. A new access and a gate were also installed without a permit. The wedding hall lies just out- side a zone scheduled for its 'High Landscape Value'. John Abela Ltd, the company facing enforcement proceedings, is the owner of Alfaran trailers. It never presented a planning appli- cation to sanction the works. Alfa Gardens are one of the wed- ding venues employed by the Ca- termax Group, owned by the Cor- inthia hotel chain and the Vassallo Builders Group. But the company, which started using the venue only last year, de- nies responsibility for any illegali- ties. The wedding hall is advertised on the company's website as one offering "opulent" open views of picturesque Mdina and its sur- roundings Labour deputy leader for party affairs Toni Abela made reference to the case in an article penned in Ilum in July, when he referred to a breach made in a rubble wall a short distance from Mount Carmel hospital. The enforcement was triggered by questions sent by MaltaToday last month on the legality of the site. Gzira public gardens to be partly 'commercialised' JAMES DEBONO A "small part" of Council of Europe garden could be handed over to pri- vate operators for commercial pur- poses, Gzira mayor Roberto Cris- tiano told MaltaToday. The garden, which is presently administered by the Gzira and Ta' Xbiex councils, was one of the areas set to be included in a tender for the privatisation of the Ta' Xbiex ma- rina. But the tendering process is pres- ently stalled by a court case institut- ed by yacht owners against Trans- port Malta over berthing facilities. According to Cristiano the inten- tion of the authorities was to en- sure that the company awarded the tender for the marina will also be responsible for the upkeep, mainte- nance and upgrading of Council of Europe garden. According to the Gzira mayor public access to the garden will not be affected in any way. But when asked whether the ten- der would have envisioned the com- mercialisation of parts of the garden as happened in the Marsaskala fam- ily park, Cristiano confirmed that a "very small part" of the garden may be used for commercial purposes. According to the Gzira mayor at this stage the tendering process is stalled as Transport Malta is await- ing the outcome of court proceed- ings. Cristiano denied that the council was involved in any meetings with any private developer, insisting that discussions have been limited to the Gzira and Ta' Xbiex councils, the lands department and Transport Malta.
